Editor's Take
So here's the thing about '47 Brand-you've probably worn one of their hats without even realizing it. Started in 1947 by two Italian immigrant brothers with a street cart outside Fenway Park, this company basically invented the sports licensing game as we know it today. Arthur and Henry D'Angelo were selling pennants for two cents back when most people couldn't imagine turning team loyalty into a fashion statement.
Fast forward to now, and '47 has become this massive sports lifestyle brand that's kind of everywhere. They've got licensing deals with the MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, NASCAR, and over 900 colleges. That's not a typo-900 colleges. In 2023 alone, they sold 25 million units of headwear. And honestly, their stuff hits different than your typical sports merch. There's this vintage-meets-modern vibe that makes their caps and apparel feel less like you're screaming "I'm a fan" and more like you're just... stylish.
What's interesting is how they've evolved. The company changed its name from Twins Enterprise to '47 Brand in 2010, then dropped "Brand" in 2015 (though people still call them that anyway). They had a flagship store on Newbury Street in Boston that closed in 2020, but they still run the Red Sox Team Store at Fenway. And get this-in August 2024, New Era Cap Company acquired them, creating a combined entity expected to generate around $2 billion in annual revenue.
The product range is actually pretty extensive. Sure, they're known for headwear-snapbacks, fitted caps, beanies, the works-but they've expanded into full apparel lines for men, women, and kids. Think hoodies, tees, outerwear, all with that same sports-meets-street aesthetic. They've done collaborations with Carhartt for NFL gear and even partnered with Liverpool FC to break into international markets.
But here's where it gets real: their customer service situation is... not great. They suspended phone support, so you're stuck submitting requests through their help center and waiting up to 48 hours for a response. Reviews mention this frustration repeatedly. The return policy is decent though-60 days from when you receive your order, but there's a $7 restocking fee and you can't return Mystery items or outlet stuff.
Notice how they've managed to stay relevant for nearly 80 years? That's the entrepreneurial DNA from the D'Angelo brothers still running through the company. They were quick to see opportunities-expanding into football in 2012, soccer in 2015, NASCAR in 2023. They're not just sitting on their baseball heritage; they're constantly finding new ways to put their logo on your head.
The brand operates mainly online now through 47brand.com, with free shipping if you join their loyalty program. They ship Monday through Friday, and during high-volume periods (looking at you, Black Friday), things can take a bit longer. International customers can shop through their Canadian, European, and Australian sites, each with slightly different policies.
