| | | The History of Merriweather Post Pavilion | Merriweather was originally built to be the home of the National Symphony Orchestra In 1968, Jimi Hendrix was Merriweather’s first rock show, where he debuted his rendition of the 'Star Spangled Banner' The following year saw the only show Led Zeppelin ever played with The Who - a show rife with drama after Zeppelin's opening set ran long and The Who pulled the plug on ‘em.
Jackson Browne’s hit tracks “Running on Empty,“ “The Load Out,” and “Stay” were all recorded live at Merriweather Post Pavilion in 1977, while Willie Nelson shared the Merriweather stage with President Jimmy Carter for renditions of ‘Georgia On My Mind’ in 1978 and 1980. In 1983, Merriweather had to hire helicopters to hover over the lawn to help dry it out from the mud-pit it’d become between two legendarily rainy Grateful Dead shows. |

Among Merriweather renovations from 2017 are the SkyLawn consisting of two cozy, naturally grassy knolls overlooking the stage, 40 feet in the air! The new roof, raised by 20 feet, enhances views and acoustics from the lawn plus solar panels have been installed on the roof that power most of the stage and production. |

An architectural marvel for a second stage located within Symphony Woods, will allow us to present our signature style programming with no overlapping sets. |

Known for its 40-acre natural oasis, Merriweather is a historic hub for music lovers, conveniently located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and offers one of the best festival environments in the country. |

Merriweather Post Pavilion isn’t just a legendary venue—it’s a next-level experience where innovation and sustainability rock just as hard as the music. The show kicks off on a massive 48-foot rotating stage that keeps the energy flowing with seamless set changes. Epic LED video walls light up the night, turning every seat into the best seat in the house. And powering all that magic? Sunshine! Merriweather is leading the charge with a major solar power push, aiming to run most of its events on clean, renewable energy. It’s the future of live music—and it’s looking (and sounding) incredible. |
