Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Aéropostale-it's basically the comeback kid of teen fashion. And honestly? That's kind of fascinating.

Most people remember Aero from the early 2000s when it was everywhere in malls, competing with Abercrombie and American Eagle for that coveted teen wallet. But then came 2016, and bankruptcy hit. Game over, right? Wrong. The brand got scooped up by Authentic Brands Group for $243 million, and by 2017, they'd reopened over 500 stores. That's not just survival-that's resurrection.

What makes their comeback particularly interesting is how they've adapted to Gen Z. Remember when everyone was obsessing over "tiny tops" on TikTok in 2021? That was Aero. They didn't plan it, didn't pay for it-just sent some crop tops to influencers and watched their phones blow up with millions of views. Sales of those tiny tops tripled. Sometimes the best marketing is no marketing at all.

But here's what really sets them apart now: they've completely flipped their product focus. When president Natalie Levy joined in 2017, the sales ratio was three-to-one tops versus bottoms, with graphic tees dominating. Now? Denim is their number one category, with sales 50% higher than 2019. That's not just a trend shift-that's a complete business model transformation.

The brand operates over 500 locations across the US and Puerto Rico, plus nearly 800 international stores. They're owned by SPARC Group (a joint venture between Authentic Brands Group and Simon Property Group), which also handles brands like Brooks Brothers and Forever 21. So they've got serious backing and retail expertise.

What's refreshing is their approach to inclusivity. Their tagline about "embracing positivity, inclusivity, and acceptance" isn't just marketing speak-it reflects how they've repositioned themselves for a generation that actually cares about those values. They're not trying to be exclusive or aspirational like some competitors. They're just trying to make decent clothes that help people feel confident.

The pricing hits that sweet spot too-quality denim and fashion essentials at "compelling values," as they put it. Not fast fashion cheap, but not premium expensive either.
