Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Afends-it's not just another sustainable fashion brand trying to cash in on the eco-friendly trend. This Byron Bay label actually walks the walk, and has been doing it since 2006, which is kind of before being "green" was cool.
Born in 2006 in the coastal town of Byron Bay, Australia, Afends was founded by Declan Wise & Jonathan Salfield off the back of a screen printing business they originally created to print band merchandise for punk & hardcore bands. And honestly? That origin story explains everything about their vibe. There's this rebellious, anti-establishment energy that runs through the brand, but it's channeled into something productive-like questioning where your clothes come from and what they're made of.
The hemp thing is legit. Driven by environmental and social impacts, they strive to do what's best for people and the planet; to design and deliver durable, eco-friendly and timeless apparel that will last a lifetime. They're not just slapping "organic" on a label and calling it a day. Since 2016, the Afends Clothing HQ, Cafe and Warehouse in Byron Bay has been running off solar power, and they've put more power back into the grid than they've used. That's the kind of detail that matters.
But let's talk about the clothes themselves. The brand does both men's and women's streetwear, with a heavy focus on hemp denim, boardshorts, graphic tees, and that effortlessly cool surf-skate aesthetic that Byron Bay basically invented. Their philosophy-"Question Everything"-isn't just marketing speak. It's about inspiring people to question what they hear and see, to educate themselves so they can make their own choices, develop their own opinions and have their own unique voice.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. Afends has grown from that first concept store in 2009 to multiple locations worldwide, but they've managed to keep that small-brand authenticity. They're stocked in major retailers, sure, but they still feel like the kind of brand where the founders might actually respond to your DM.
One thing worth noting-their return policy has gotten some mixed reviews online. Sale items can only be returned for store credit with a $20 deduction, which some customers find frustrating. So maybe think twice before impulse-buying during a sale.
The price point sits in that mid-range sweet spot where you're paying for quality and sustainability without needing to take out a loan. And the fact that they're committed to using 100% sustainable fibers? That's not a future goal-they've already done it.
Afends is for people who want their wardrobe to reflect their values without looking like they're trying too hard. It's surf culture meets conscious consumerism, with a punk rock attitude thrown in for good measure.
