You know what's interesting about AG Jeans? Most people think it's just another premium denim brand, but there's actually this whole sustainability story that kind of sets them apart from the pack.
They're recycling 50,000 gallons of water daily at their facilities - and that's not just marketing speak. Since 2010, they've been focused on sustainability as their chief distinguishing feature, upgrading to energy-efficient washers, installing solar panels at headquarters in 2016, upgrading laser technology in 2017, and installing a water-recycling system in 2019 that allows them to operate almost entirely on recycled water. That's pretty impressive when you consider how water-intensive denim production typically is.
But here's the thing - the company was founded in 2000 in Los Angeles by Yul Ku and Italian designer Adriano Goldschmied, though Goldschmied left in 2004 and sold his share to Ku. The business actually went through a rough patch from 2004 to 2008, with major retailers like Nordstrom and Anthropologie stopping their purchases, until Ku's son Samuel took over in 2008 and introduced the "boyfriend" style jeans that helped turn things around.
What's really cool is their vertical manufacturing approach. AG manufactures all products in-house including cutting, sewing, and distressing, with their main facility in South Gate, California and other facilities in Los Angeles and Mexico City. This gives them way more control over quality and sustainability practices than brands that outsource everything.
They've got 12 retail stores across the United States, including some pretty prime real estate in places like Madison Avenue in New York. And honestly, if you're into that California-casual-meets-premium-quality vibe, they've nailed it. Every AG piece references their home state, paying homage to Los Angeles' diverse culture and relaxed, optimistic attitude.
The pricing reflects the premium positioning, but when you factor in the sustainability efforts and the fact that they've got 24 years of experience as leaders in the premium denim space, it starts to make sense. Plus, their commitment to making jeans that actually get better with wear is something you don't see everywhere.
