Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Alex and Ani - they basically invented the whole charm bangle craze that took over every mall in America about a decade ago. You know those expandable wire bracelets with meaningful symbols? Yeah, those. The company's signature design is a patented sliding mechanism that replaces traditional clasps, making each bracelet entirely adjustable - basically one-size-fits-all jewelry, which was kind of revolutionary when you think about it.

Founded in 2004 by Carolyn Rafaelian, the name comes from a combination of her two daughters' first names. And the company didn't just stumble into success - revenue grew from $5 million in 2010 to over $500 million in 2016. That's insane growth for a jewelry brand.

But what really set them apart was the whole conscious capitalism angle. They design and create charm bangles, bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings that adorn the body, enlighten the mind and empower the spirit. It wasn't just about looking cute - each piece supposedly carried meaning, positive energy, all that good stuff. Plus, the products are handcrafted from recycled metals, which appealed to environmentally conscious shoppers way before sustainability became the buzzword it is today.

The company also did something pretty cool with their Charity By Design program. Launched in 2011, 20% of sales go to charity. They partnered with everyone from sports teams to cultural organizations, creating custom pieces that let people wear their passions literally on their sleeves.

The jewelry itself ranges from zodiac signs to Disney characters to college logos - basically, if you want to express something about yourself through a stackable bracelet, they've probably got a charm for it. And despite all the corporate drama, there's still something appealing about jewelry that's made in America, uses recycled materials, and lets you build a collection that actually means something to you. Whether you're into the whole positive energy thing or just think the bracelets look nice, Alex and Ani carved out a pretty specific niche in the accessories world.
