Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Alexandre Birman-it's one of those brands that kind of sneaks up on you. You see the shoes on someone at a gala or scrolling through Instagram, and you think, "Okay, those are gorgeous," but then you dig a little deeper and realize there's this whole fascinating story behind them.

The brand launched back in 2008 in Brazil, which already tells you something about the aesthetic. Brazilian design has this reputation for being sensual and sophisticated without trying too hard, and that's exactly what you get here. The majority of styles are produced in Brazil and Italy, with highly skilled artisans carefully handcrafting each pair-some styles taking up to 8 hours to make. Eight hours. For one pair of shoes. That's the kind of detail we're talking about.

But what really sets Alexandre Birman apart is the materials. He's known for his trademark use of exotic skins like snakeskin, crocodile, lizard and ostrich, which sounds intense but somehow never feels over-the-top. The designs walk this interesting line between statement piece and everyday luxury. Take the Clarita sandal, for instance-it's become the brand's signature style, with this distinctive bow detail that's recognizable but not screaming for attention.

And the celebrity factor? It's real. The line is loved by A-listers like Gisele Bundchen, Blake Lively, and the Duchess of Cambridge. Notice how it's not just one type of celebrity either-you've got supermodels, actresses, and literal royalty all wearing the same brand. That kind of cross-demographic appeal is rare in luxury footwear.

Here's what's interesting about the business side: Alexandre Birman isn't just some guy who decided to make pretty shoes. Born into a family of shoemakers, the Brazilian designer launched his own label, Schutz, in 1995 at the age of 19. After seeing annual revenues of over $64 million, Birman merged Schutz with his family's shoe group, Arezzo. So by the time he launched his namesake brand in 2008, he already had serious industry experience and infrastructure behind him.

The brand's expansion has been strategic too. They've got boutiques on Madison Avenue in New York and at Bal Harbour Shops in Florida, plus they're stocked at all the heavy-hitter retailers like Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Net-a-Porter. But they're not oversaturated-you can't find them everywhere, which maintains that exclusive feel.

What I find compelling is the customization aspect. Several of their boutiques offer made-to-order services where you can choose different colors, fabrics, and details. In an era where everything feels mass-produced, that personal touch matters. It's luxury that actually feels luxurious, not just expensive.

The price point reflects the craftsmanship-these aren't impulse purchases. But when you consider the handwork, the materials, and the fact that these shoes are designed to be statement pieces you'll wear for years, the investment starts to make sense. They're the kind of shoes that elevate an entire outfit, which is basically what you're paying for in luxury footwear anyway.
