Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Arhaus - it's basically what happens when someone decides furniture shopping shouldn't feel like a chore. Founded back in 1986 in Cleveland's Flats district, this isn't your typical big-box furniture store churning out particle board nonsense. They're the folks who actually travel the globe hunting down artisans who still know how to make things by hand.

And I mean really by hand. We're talking about rug weavers in India, woodworkers in Italy and Mexico, upholstery craftspeople in North Carolina. Arhaus provides a diversified assortment of specialty goods and services addressing omnichannel direct-to-consumer and business-to-business residential and commercial operations. The company went public on the Nasdaq in 2021 with an IPO valued at $1.75 billion, which tells you people are willing to pay for quality that lasts.

But here's what makes them different - about 50% of their products incorporate recycled materials. They're harvesting wood from mango trees that don't produce fruit anymore, repurposing recycled copper, turning marine litter into upholstery fabric. It's not just marketing fluff either. In 2021, in enforcing its commitment to American made product, Arhaus expanded its domestic manufacturing and distribution capabilities with the inauguration of its 500,000 square foot facility in Conover, North Carolina.

The shopping experience itself is pretty unique. The company strategically curates 103 showrooms situated in affluent real estate markets in the contiguous United States. These aren't just stores - they're more like design theaters where you can actually see how pieces work together. And if you work with one of their in-home designers? Your order value jumps to roughly 4x higher than going solo. That's not because they're upselling you - it's because they're helping you actually create a cohesive space instead of buying random pieces.

Notice how they've managed to stay relevant while other furniture retailers struggle? Part of it is their omni-channel approach. You can browse online, visit a showroom, work with a designer virtually or in person. The whole thing flows together seamlessly. Their Q3 revenue hit $345 million, and they're projecting between $1.35 billion and $1.38 billion for the full year.

The brand name itself is kind of clever - it's a mashup of Aarhus (a Danish city) and "haus" (German for house). Very on-brand for a company that sources globally but maintains that artisan, handcrafted aesthetic. They've also got this thing called "relics" - actual antiques they buy, refurbish, and sell. So you might walk out with a one-of-a-kind piece that has actual history.

What's interesting is their commitment goes beyond just selling furniture. They support The Friends of Arhaus Children's Home in Nepal, which houses over 70 kids. They've partnered with Global Dental Relief to provide care to more than 40,000 children worldwide. They're working with American Forests to plant a million trees. It's the kind of stuff that makes you feel slightly better about dropping serious money on a sofa.

The pieces themselves? They're designed to be heirloom quality - stuff you can actually pass down instead of replacing every few years. Everything from sofas and dining tables to lighting and rugs, all with that handcrafted, globally-inspired aesthetic. And yeah, it's premium pricing, but when you're getting furniture made by skilled artisans using sustainable materials, you're paying for something that'll actually last.
