Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Armitron-it's one of those brands that's been quietly doing its thing for 50 years, and honestly? Most people have no idea how cool the backstory is.
Founded in 1975 by Eugen Gluck, a Holocaust survivor, this isn't just another watch company churning out timepieces. It's basically the American dream in wristwatch form. The company is still family-run today, with Gluck's daughter Bobbie serving as CEO, which kind of explains why they've managed to stay relevant when so many other brands from that era have disappeared.
The name itself is pretty clever-it's a mashup of "Armin" and "electronics," which makes sense when you realize they specialized in LED-powered, five-function digital watches back when that was cutting-edge stuff. We're talking the mid-70s here, when digital watches were basically the smartphones of their day.
But what really sets Armitron apart is their whole philosophy. They've been creating fashionable, quality watches for over fifty years, and they've never lost sight of making watches accessible. As of 1999, Armitron had the fifth largest share of all watch purchasers by brand in the United States-that's not nothing. And they're the Official Sponsor of the New York Yankees, with that massive clock at Yankee Stadium that you've probably seen a million times.
These days, they're doing some genuinely interesting stuff. They teamed up with Tide Ocean Material to debut Wave, the brand's first ocean-plastics collection, turning ocean-bound plastic into actual watches. Plus, they've got smartwatches now-the Boom Smartwatch tracks steps, sleep, heart rate, and offers up to 4 days of battery life.
The watches themselves range from retro LED designs (hello, 1970s nostalgia) to elegant dress watches with genuine diamonds. And the prices? Way more reasonable than you'd expect for the quality you're getting. It's that whole "accessible luxury" thing they've been doing since day one.
