Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Article-they basically took one look at the furniture industry back in 2013 and said, "Yeah, this is broken." And honestly? They weren't wrong.
Four friends and software engineers-Aamir Baig, Fraser Hall, and brothers Sam and Andy Prochazka-saw the whole experience of buying furniture as frustrating and time consuming. Product quality and customer service were inconsistent. The whole process took way too long! Their solution was pretty radical for the time: cut out the middleman entirely, work directly with manufacturers, and sell everything online. No showrooms (well, until recently), no pushy salespeople, just clean mid-century modern furniture delivered to your door.
What makes Article different is that engineer mindset. Since launching in 2013, they've made it their mission to make great style easy, long-lasting and well-priced. They work directly with manufacturers to produce unique, durable pieces using high-quality materials. This direct relationship means they can bring you beautiful modern furniture and decor at unrivaled value. They're not just slapping together particle board and calling it a day-they're actually obsessive about materials and construction.
The numbers tell a pretty compelling story. They've delivered quality furniture to more than half a million North American homes and businesses. And get this-Article reached profitability in 2015, two years after it first launched. In an era when most startups bleed money for years, that's not nothing.
Their bestseller, the Sven sofa, has basically become iconic in the direct-to-consumer furniture world. It's that buttery leather mid-century piece you've probably seen all over Instagram. But they've got way more than just sofas-dining tables, bedroom sets, outdoor furniture, lighting, rugs. The aesthetic is consistently modern with Scandinavian and mid-century influences. Think clean lines, warm woods, quality leather and fabrics.
Their team is able to get most in-stock orders from warehouses to your front door in two weeks or less. Which, if you've ever ordered furniture from a traditional retailer and waited months, feels like magic. They've built out their own logistics network with fulfillment centers across North America, and they even handle a lot of deliveries in-house now.
The return policy is surprisingly generous for furniture. You have up to 30 days from the date of delivery to return your furniture. Most furniture companies make returns nearly impossible, but Article actually lets you try stuff out. There are fees involved (shipping isn't free both ways), but the option exists.
One interesting development: Article's first-ever brick-and-mortar store opened in Vancouver in August 2024. The e-commerce retailer, known for designing modern-style furniture at mid-market prices, aims to blend the convenience of online shopping with the benefit of an in-store visit, featuring displays and personalized consultations. So they're not abandoning their digital-first roots, just adding another option.
The company culture seems pretty distinctive too. Article is staffed by engineers, journalists, painters, weight lifters, slack-liners, mountain bikers, chefs, reiki masters, and more. They call employees "Particles" (yes, really), and there's this whole philosophy about solving meaningful problems and not taking yourself too seriously.
Pricing sits in that sweet spot between IKEA and West Elm-not cheap, but not luxury either. A sofa might run you $1,500 to $3,500 depending on size and materials. Quality-wise, reviews are generally positive, though like any furniture company, they have their share of complaints about delivery issues or occasional quality control problems.
Article figured out how to make furniture shopping less painful by cutting out the traditional retail markup and actually caring about design. They're not perfect, but they've carved out a real niche in the crowded furniture market by being consistently good at what they do.
