You know that Latin phrase everyone pretends to understand? Anima Sana In Corpore Sano. Well, that's basically ASICS in a nutshell - and yeah, it actually means "a sound mind in a sound body." Kind of perfect for a company that's been obsessed with the connection between mental and physical health since 1949.
Here's the thing about ASICS that most people don't realize. The founder, Kihachiro Onitsuka, started making basketball shoes in post-war Japan because he genuinely believed sports could help rebuild people's spirits. Not just their bodies - their minds. That wasn't marketing speak back then. It was a mission. And somehow, more than 75 years later, that same philosophy is still driving everything they do.
The company's come a long way from those first basketball sneakers in Kobe. These days, ASICS pulls in around ¥570.4 billion in annual sales, with about half of that coming from performance running shoes. But here's what's interesting - they're not just chasing the performance athlete market. They've got this whole research facility called the ASICS Institute of Sport Science where they're literally studying human movement and developing technologies to maximize what our bodies can do.
And speaking of technology, remember those iconic striped shoes? The Mexico 66 design with the crossed stripes - the ones Bruce Lee helped make famous - that's pure ASICS DNA. Then there's their GEL cushioning system they introduced in 1986, which uses actual silicone to absorb shock. It's the kind of innovation that keeps runners coming back, whether they're training for marathons or just trying to stay active.
But ASICS isn't stuck in the past. They've been making some pretty bold moves lately - acquiring fitness apps like Runkeeper, launching their OneASICS membership program, and even conducting global studies on mental wellbeing and exercise. One recent study found that people who exercise regularly score 67 out of 100 on mental wellbeing, compared to just 54 for inactive folks. That's not nothing.
The brand operates in over 65 countries now, with about 8,987 employees worldwide. Only 16% of their sales are in Japan anymore - they've become truly global, with major markets in North America, Europe, and China. And they're not slowing down. They recently moved their North American headquarters into a former shoe factory in Boston's Leather District, which feels kind of poetic when you think about it.
What makes ASICS different is they've never really wavered from that original vision. While other athletic brands chase celebrity endorsements and streetwear hype, ASICS keeps focusing on the science of movement and the mental benefits of staying active. Sure, they sponsor big-name athletes like Novak Djokovic, but they're equally invested in helping everyday people discover what movement can do for their minds.
It's a company that's managed to stay relevant without losing its soul. And in an industry that's constantly chasing the next trend, that's actually pretty rare.
