Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Atoms-they're kind of obsessed. And I mean that in the best way possible.
This Brooklyn-based footwear brand offers quarter size shoes and allows customers to buy pairs of shoes in two different sizes. Yeah, you read that right. Quarter sizes. Because apparently 70% of people have at least a quarter-size difference between their two feet, and more than 7% have a half-size discrepancy. Who knew?
The brand was founded by husband-and-wife duo Waqas Ali and Sidra Qasim, who have one of those entrepreneurial origin stories that makes you want to quit your day job. They started their first footwear company as students in Pakistan in 2012, then moved to Mountain View as part of Y Combinator's accelerator program in 2015. But here's where it gets interesting-instead of just assuming they knew what people wanted, they actually traveled the world researching how people wear shoes. Turns out, everyone's wearing sneakers. Even in Italy.
Their approach is refreshingly simple: make one really good shoe instead of a thousand mediocre ones. Atoms are the most comfortable shoes for everyday wear, featuring elastic laces, copper lining, breathable materials, and simple design. That copper lining? It's antimicrobial, which means your shoes won't smell like a gym locker after a few wears. Small detail, huge impact.
And they've got some serious fans. Reddit co-founder and investor Alexis Ohanian wore a pair of Atoms to the 2019 Met Gala. The brand has also collaborated with tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) on a custom sneaker that sold out within 48 hours. Not bad for a startup that once had a waiting list of nearly 40,000 people.
But what really sets Atoms apart is their try-before-you-commit model. When you order, they send you three pairs in quarter-size increments. You try them all on at home, keep the two shoes that fit best (even if they're different sizes), and send the rest back. It's like Warby Parker, but for your feet.
The shoes themselves are minimalist-no flashy logos, no unnecessary branding. Just clean lines and thoughtful design. They come in a handful of colors (think black, white, grey, blue) and they're 100% vegan. The price point sits around $129-$145, which puts them in premium territory but not absurdly so.
Notice how they're not trying to be everything to everyone? That's intentional. They've expanded slowly-adding a Model 001, kids' shoes (Model 123), and limited collaborations-but they're not flooding the market with 50 different styles. The company turned profitable in April 2023, which is pretty remarkable for a direct-to-consumer brand in today's market.
The founders are hands-on too. They're active on social media, sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of their design process and materials sourcing. It feels less like corporate marketing and more like... well, like two people who genuinely care about making great shoes.
