Mira's Last Dance Audiobook: Is the Audio Version Worth It?

Lois McMaster Bujold · Narrated by Grover Gardner · Unabridged

About the Book

Mira's Last Dance is a fantasy novella by Lois McMaster Bujold, set in her World of the Five Gods, the same universe as The Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls. It is the fifth entry in the Penric and Desdemona series, following directly from the events of Penric's Mission.

The story picks up mid-escape. Penric, a Temple sorcerer who shares his body with the demon Desdemona, is injured and on the run. He's trying to move a disgraced general, Arisaydia, and his sister Nikys through the remaining stretch of hostile territory in Cedonia before they can reach safety in the Duchy of Orbas. The journey gets complicated, as it tends to in these novellas, when the group hits a town called Sosie and things don't go as planned.

Because this is a direct continuation of Penric's Mission, it's not a good starting point for the series. Readers who haven't read at least that previous novella will be dropped into a story already in motion with little context. For those already following Penric and Desdemona, the novella delivers more of what the series does consistently: a light tone, competent fantasy world-building, and Desdemona's voice as a counterpoint to Penric's more cautious perspective.

Narration & Audio Performance

Grover Gardner is the consistent narrator across the Penric and Desdemona novellas, and his performance here is in line with the rest of the series. His style is measured and clear, which suits the tone of these stories. Bujold writes with a dry wit that Gardner handles without over-playing it, the humor lands without sounding forced.

His character differentiation is adequate rather than remarkable. Nikys and some of the secondary characters can blur together slightly, but Penric's voice is distinct enough to anchor most scenes. For a novella-length production, these are typically around two to three hours, that's unlikely to cause real problems. The pace of the narration matches the pace of the writing: steady, unhurried, and easy to follow.

If you've already listened to earlier entries in the series narrated by Gardner, this will feel familiar. If you're new to the series, the Audible sample is worth checking to make sure his style works for you before committing.

The Audible Verdict

Mira's Last Dance is a short, well-constructed fantasy novella that translates cleanly to audio. Grover Gardner's narration is reliable and consistent with the rest of the series. The main reason this doesn't earn a paid credit outright is the novella length, you're getting a shorter listening experience than a full novel, and whether that justifies a credit depends on your listening habits. For fans of the Penric series already invested in the characters, it's a natural next listen. For newcomers, start with Penric's Demon first.

Is This Book a Good Fit for Audio?

The Penric and Desdemona novellas are well-suited to audio. The structure is linear, dialogue-driven, and character-focused. There's nothing in the format, no maps to reference, no charts, no footnotes, that requires a visual page. You can follow the story entirely by ear without losing anything meaningful.

The novella length also makes this a practical audio choice. It works well in a single long session or spread across a couple of commutes. The pacing is consistent enough that there are no dense stretches requiring you to rewind and re-listen. If anything, the audio format suits these lighter fantasy novellas better than it suits longer, more complex works in the same genre.
