Starsight Audiobook: Is the Audio Version Worth It?

Brandon Sanderson · Narrated by Suzy Jackson · Unabridged

About the Book

Starsight is the second book in Brandon Sanderson's Skyward series, a young adult science fiction story following Spensa, a fighter pilot living on a planet under siege by an alien force called the Krell. The first book, Skyward, established her as a scrappy underdog who fought her way into the pilot program despite her father's reputation as a deserter and a traitor. Starsight picks up where that left off, but expands the scope considerably, Spensa moves beyond her home planet and begins to encounter the larger galaxy.

This installment is more about discovery than combat. Spensa operates undercover among alien species, trying to learn the truth about the Krell and the mysterious hyperspace technology that seems central to the war. The tone shifts noticeably from the first book, there's less of the scrappy underdog energy and more of a spy-thriller structure, with Spensa navigating unfamiliar social dynamics among beings who are technically her enemies.

Readers coming directly from Skyward will find this a natural continuation, but Starsight is not a good entry point for newcomers. The emotional stakes depend on investment in characters and relationships built in the first book. If you haven't read Skyward, start there.

Narration & Audio Performance

Suzy Jackson narrated Skyward as well, so she carries her interpretation of Spensa directly into this book. That continuity matters, Spensa has a very specific voice: blunt, a little theatrical, frequently referencing ancient warrior mythology. Jackson's delivery captures that personality without overdoing it. Spensa can easily tip into annoying in the wrong hands, but Jackson keeps her grounded.

The alien characters in Starsight add a new challenge compared to the first book, and Jackson differentiates them with enough variation that you can track who is speaking without losing the thread. The pacing is steady and suits Sanderson's prose style, which tends toward clear, functional sentences with action-oriented momentum. Nothing in the production feels rushed or flat.

If you listened to Skyward on audio and liked Jackson's performance, this is a straightforward continuation of the same approach. If you found her delivery too even-keeled in that book, Starsight won't change your mind, the style is consistent across both.

The Audible Verdict

Starsight is a competent and enjoyable audiobook, but it's a sequel, its value on audio depends almost entirely on whether you already listened to Skyward in the same format. Jackson's narration is reliable, and the linear plot structure works well in audio. It's a reasonable use of a free trial credit, particularly if you're already mid-series in audio form. It doesn't quite clear the bar for a paid credit on its own merits.

Is This Book a Good Fit for Audio?

Sanderson's YA sci-fi prose is well-suited to audio. The writing is linear, action-forward, and dialogue-heavy, none of the structural complexity of his adult fantasy work, which can be harder to follow without the ability to flip back. Starsight moves at a pace that holds attention through long listening sessions, whether commuting or exercising.

There are no charts, diagrams, or visual elements to miss. The worldbuilding is explained through dialogue and internal narration rather than appendices or maps, which makes it more audio-friendly than something like the Stormlight Archive books. The one mild caveat is that Sanderson does include some alien terminology and named factions that can blur together on audio if you're listening in short, interrupted sessions. It's worth using Whispersync if that's your pattern.
