Returns
What is the return window?
There is no fee to cancel or modify your booking if it is done more than 48 hours before your rental begins. For cancellations made within 48 hours of pick-up, fees may apply or there may be no refund.
How will I receive my refund?
Once you cancel your reservation, you will get a confirmation confirming the booking is cancelled and your money promptly refunded. Refunds are processed back to the original payment method used for booking.
Can I modify my booking?
Rental rates are subject to change when a booking is modified based on the rates available at the time of change. Auto Europe will charge no fee for modifying the reservation as long as you do so 48 hours before the intended pick-up time, however the price will automatically change to the current rate displayed online on the website.
What is the Fully Flexible Cancellation Cover?
Auto Europe offers a Flexible Cancellation Cover that protects your rental cost with the ability to cancel for any reason, and it can be added to your rental during the booking process or up to 24 hours prior to the pick-up date.
Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Auto Europe-they've been around since 1954, which in the car rental world is basically forever. But they're not actually a rental company in the traditional sense. They're more like that friend who knows everyone and can get you the best deal because of it.
Think of them as a broker. They work with over 20,000 pickup locations across 180 countries, partnering with the big names you already know-Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget-but often at better rates than you'd get going direct. The pitch is simple: save up to 30% on car rentals worldwide with their Best Rate Guarantee. And honestly? That's not just marketing fluff. They've built relationships with suppliers over 70 years, so they can negotiate rates that individual travelers simply can't access.
What's kind of interesting is their specialty. While they operate globally, their sweet spot has always been Europe (hence the name). They've got more than 60 years of car rental experience, and they really understand the quirks of renting abroad-like when you need an International Driving Permit for Italy, or how young driver fees work differently across countries. Their customer service reps actually seem to know this stuff, which is refreshing when you're trying to figure out if you can drive that rental from France into Switzerland.
Here's what sets them apart: free cancellation up to 48 hours before pick-up. No booking fees. No credit card fees. And they offer this "Fully Flexible Cancellation" add-on that covers you right up until pickup time-useful if you're the type who books early but worries about plans changing.
They've also expanded beyond basic rentals. Need a luxury car in Milan? They've got Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Planning a long European road trip? They partner with Peugeot and Renault for 21 to 175-day leases across over 40 European countries. Want a motorhome for Australia? Yep, they do that too.
The company's headquartered in Portland, Maine, with offices in Munich, Lisbon, and Sydney. They've maintained an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau since 1993, and they've racked up awards like Europe's Leading Car Rental Company multiple times over.
But let's be real-they're a middleman, which means when things go sideways, you're dealing with both Auto Europe and the actual rental company. Some travelers love having that advocate in their corner. Others prefer the simplicity of booking direct. It really depends on whether you value the potential savings and expertise over having one less party involved.
One more thing: their website can feel a bit overwhelming with all the options and add-ons. But if you're planning an international trip and want someone who speaks fluent "car rental" to help navigate the insurance maze and local regulations, they're worth a look. Just read the fine print on what's included versus what costs extra at pickup-that's true for any rental, but especially when booking through a broker.
