Editor's Take

Barnes & Noble isn't just surviving in the digital age-it's actually thriving, and that's kind of remarkable when you think about it. While other bookstore chains have shuttered their doors, B&N has figured out how to stay relevant by embracing everything from TikTok trends to cozy café culture.

Walk into any of their 600+ locations and you'll immediately notice they're not your grandfather's bookstore anymore. Sure, books are still front and center, but they've expanded into this whole lifestyle experience. You've got your Starbucks corner where people camp out with laptops, vinyl records for the music enthusiasts, board games that actually get families talking again, and even LEGO sets that make adults feel like kids.

But here's what's really interesting-they've managed to ride the #BookTok wave better than almost anyone expected. The company's been smart about partnering with social media influencers and creating dedicated sections for trending reads. When a book goes viral on TikTok, Barnes & Noble is usually ready with displays and recommendations that capitalize on that momentum.

Their membership program is another smart move-for about $25 a year, you get free shipping and store discounts, which keeps customers coming back. And they've been expanding, not contracting, with plans to open 65 stores this year according to recent reports.

What really sets them apart is how they've managed to feel both corporate and community-focused. Barnes & Noble hosts nearly 100,000 events a year, engaging with regional businesses and educational institutions to become pillars of local communities. That's a lot of author readings, book clubs, and story times.

The company's also been smart about adapting their store formats. They're experimenting with smaller, boutique-style locations in some markets while maintaining their flagship superstores in others. It's this flexibility that seems to be working for them when rigid approaches have failed other retailers.
