Editor's Take
So here's the thing about bebe - it's kind of a phoenix story, but not in the way you'd expect. Founded back in 1976 by Manny Mashouf in San Francisco, bebe basically invented what we now call "contemporary fashion." You know that sweet spot between junior clothing and expensive designer stuff? That was bebe's whole thing. The name itself comes from Shakespeare's "To be or not to be" soliloquy, which Mashouf thought up at a party in the '70s. Pretty clever, right?
For decades, bebe was the go-to destination for women who wanted that sexy, sophisticated look without the couture price tag. We're talking form-fitting bandage dresses, logo tops that screamed confidence, and separates that made you feel like you could conquer the boardroom and the nightclub in the same outfit. At its peak, the brand operated over 300 stores across North America and had international locations spanning from the Middle East to Asia.
But then 2017 happened. In what felt like a shocking move to many fashion lovers, bebe closed all 168 of its remaining brick-and-mortar stores and went completely online. No more mall shopping trips, no more trying on those iconic dresses in-store. The retail landscape was changing, and bebe made a bold pivot to e-commerce only. Some saw it as the end of an era; others saw it as smart adaptation.
Today, bebe exists purely as an online retailer at bebe.com, and honestly? They've leaned into it. The brand still delivers that same confident, contemporary aesthetic - think bestselling tops for work, those signature bandage dresses for nights out, and activewear that's anything but basic. They've got a pretty solid social media presence too, with over 683,000 Instagram followers and an active TikTok where they encourage customers to tag #BebeBabe.
What's interesting is how bebe has maintained its identity through all these changes. The brand still targets that same demographic - trend-conscious women who want to look put-together without breaking the bank. And they've kept that focus on creating a complete wardrobe: dresses, tops, jeans, shoes, accessories, even fragrances. Everything you need to build that confident, sexy, modern woman aesthetic they've always championed.
Bebe still believes in that "feeling sexy and looking great instills confidence" philosophy. Whether you're shopping for work clothes, weekend vibes, or special occasion dresses, the brand wants you to feel like the main character in your own life. And with their 30-day return policy and customer service that's actually reachable (rare these days), they're making the online-only thing work.
