Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Behno-it's not your typical luxury handbag brand, and that's kind of the whole point. Founded in 2015 by Shivam Punjya, this New York-based label has a mission to redefine the fashion industry by integrating conscious manufacturing practices and luxury design. The name itself, "behno," means "sisters" in Hindi, which tells you everything about the brand's ethos before you even see a single bag.

But let's back up. Punjya didn't come from fashion-he studied political economics and global poverty, which feels almost too perfect for what Behno became. During his time in India, he interacted with textile workers and became aware of the disparities between their labor and earnings, an awareness further heightened by the tragic Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh, which resulted in the loss of more than 1,100 lives. That's heavy stuff, and it's what drove him to create something different.

The brand launched in 2015 as a luxury apparel collection but pivoted to bags and accessories in 2018. And honestly? That pivot was smart. The bags are what people remember-minimalist, modern silhouettes with that signature knot detail that's become instantly recognizable if you know what to look for. They work very closely with nine reputable factories in India that strictly adhere to the "Behno Standard" to handcraft high-quality accessories that are also made ethically.

Notice how I said "Behno Standard"? That's not just marketing speak. The standard is broken down into six categories: health, garment worker mobility, family planning, women's rights, worker satisfaction and benefits, eco-consciousness. It's basically their blueprint for how manufacturing should work, developed from the ground up by actually talking to the workers themselves rather than making assumptions about what they need.

The bags themselves sit in that sweet spot between accessible and luxury-think $295 to $475 for most styles. Hero products include the Elizabeth Baguette Mini ($295), Ina Mini Crossbody ($295), and Katrina Satchel ($475). The Ina bag, with its bucket shape and drawstring closure, has become something of a cult favorite. It comes in three sizes and basically every color you can imagine, from classic black to vibrant scuba blue.

And here's something that'll make you respect the brand even more: The NDSS x Behno collection is very close to Punjya's heart as it is inspired by his younger sister Nirali who has Down Syndrome, with 20% of all sales donated to the cause. The Nini Bag was specifically designed to honor her. That's the kind of personal touch that makes Behno feel less like a corporation and more like a passion project that happened to scale.

The brand was invited to Buckingham Palace by the late Queen of England to present an ethical eveningwear look to Her Royal Highness Catherine Middleton, and as the only American brand invited to the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange, it's an honor well deserved. Not bad for a brand that's barely a decade old.

The aesthetic is pure New York minimalism-clean lines, quality leather from tanneries near Venice and Chennai, and that modern sensibility that works whether you're heading to a meeting or brunch. Designed in the Big Apple, Behno bags reflect a New York state of mind with a modern minimalist aesthetic, with the diversity amongst the city serving as a muse for the brand's simple-but-striking silhouettes.

One thing to note: all purchases on the official Behno site are final sale and are not eligible for returns, exchanges, or store credit. So you really need to be sure about what you're buying. But given the customer reviews consistently praise both the quality and the customer service, it seems most people don't regret their purchases.

Basically, if you're the type who wants a designer bag that doesn't come with the guilt of exploitative labor practices, Behno's your answer. It's luxury with a conscience, and in 2025, that feels less like a nice-to-have and more like the bare minimum we should expect.
