Editor's Take
You know how some companies just kind of exist in the background of your tech life? Belkin isn't one of those. They've been around since 1983-that's over 40 years-and honestly, if you've ever charged a phone, connected a laptop, or protected a screen, there's a decent chance Belkin had something to do with it.
Here's the thing about Belkin that most people don't realize: they started in a garage. Like, literally. Chet Pipkin founded Belkin in his parents' home in Hawthorne, California, to manufacture computer cables for the new personal computer and tech accessory market. Back then, he was just a UCLA student who noticed people needed cables to connect their computers to printers. Simple observation, massive business.
Fast forward to today, and Belkin is headquartered in El Segundo, California, cranking out everything from wireless chargers and power banks to screen protectors and docking stations. By 2015 the company had 1,350 employees and sales of more than $1 billion. That's not nothing. And in 2018, they got acquired by Foxconn for $886 million, but they still operate independently, which means they've kept that scrappy, innovation-focused vibe.
What's interesting is how they've evolved. They're not just making cables anymore-though they still do that really well. They've expanded into MagSafe chargers, Qi2 wireless charging (they were one of the first to get certified), and even smart home stuff through their WeMo brand. Notice how they're always kind of there when Apple launches something new? That's intentional. Belkin has positioned itself as the go-to accessories brand for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users.
But here's where it gets real: sustainability. In 2009, Belkin pledged to reduce 25 percent of the company's worldwide electricity consumption by 2017, and by 2018, Belkin had 37 percent reduction worldwide. In 2024, Belkin announced an aim to be 100 percent carbon neutral across its business by 2030. Solar panels, EV charging stations, motion sensor lighting-they're actually putting money where their mouth is.
And they're not just about profit. They've donated $350,000 to Susan G. Komen through pink ribbon iPod cases, they partner with Da Vinci Schools to give students hands-on career experience, and they're involved in community programs in Compton. So yeah, there's a corporate responsibility angle that feels genuine.
The product range is wild when you actually look at it. Wireless chargers that deliver 25W of power. Screen protectors with lifetime warranties. Cables that are braided and actually last. Docking stations for professionals. They've basically covered every possible way you might need to connect, power, or protect a device. And they design everything at their Los Angeles headquarters with what they call "people-centric design"-which basically means they obsess over details and test the hell out of everything before it ships.
One more thing: they're global. Offices in 23 countries, products sold in over 100 countries. But they've stayed true to their Southern California roots, and you can feel that in how they operate-laid-back but results-driven, innovative but practical.
So if you're looking at Belkin, you're not just looking at another tech accessories company. You're looking at a 40-year evolution from garage startup to billion-dollar global brand that somehow still feels like it gives a damn about making good stuff.
