Big Ears attendee will tell you: what makes the festival special—in addition to the music and programming—is a sense of place and the dynamic community that surrounds it. This week, that spirit takes shape in a project all its own: Knoxville Broadcast, a massive, site-specific work by acclaimed composer Lisa Bielawa that brings Knoxville’s musical community to the forefront.
On Friday evening and twice on Saturday, more than 500 musicians—bands and orchestras, folk, old time, gospel, choirs, drumming groups, and more—will converge in the Tennessee Amphitheater and gradually disperse through World’s Fair Park, coordinated by long-distance musical cues. Audiences can wander and choose their own paths, hearing the piece from multiple perspectives as it unfolds.
