Editor's Take

Here's the thing about Black Diamond Equipment-they're basically the company that saved climbing gear from extinction, and then turned it into an empire. Back in 1989, when legendary climber Yvon Chouinard's equipment company went belly-up (yeah, before he made Patagonia what it is today), a group of employees led by Peter Metcalf bought the bankrupt assets and started over. From scratch. In debt. With everything to lose.

And honestly? That origin story kind of explains everything about how they operate now.

Black Diamond makes technical gear and apparel for climbing, skiing, running, and hiking-but they're not just slapping logos on generic equipment. With their global headquarters located at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah, they're literally testing gear in their backyard. Like, the same day they design an ice tool, they can drive 20 minutes and actually use it on real ice. That's not marketing fluff-that's just geography working in their favor.

The product lineup is pretty extensive. Climbing products include carabiners, quickdraws, harnesses, belay devices, helmets, ice tools, crampons, ice screws, and bouldering pads. They also produce skiing and avalanche safety equipment. The company's mountain products include tents and shelters, lighting, trekking poles, and backpacks. Notice how that's not "we make a little bit of everything"-it's more like "we make everything you'd actually need if you're serious about this."

Their Camalot cams are kind of legendary in the climbing world. Not in a "cool story bro" way, but in a "this is what people actually buy and trust with their lives" way. They developed the world's first wire gate carabiner, which sounds technical until you realize it just means they figured out how to make carabiners lighter and stronger at the same time. Revolutionary? Maybe. Practical? Definitely.

But here's where it gets interesting-as of June 2025, Black Diamond Equipment's annual revenue reached $75M with approximately 522 employees across 4 continents. That's not small, but it's not massive either. They're big enough to have global reach but small enough that they're still making decisions based on what actual climbers and skiers need, not what some boardroom thinks will sell.

In March 2025, they opened their largest and most immersive retail store to date in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood-which makes sense when you think about it. Seattle's got mountains, rain, and people who actually use this stuff year-round. They've also got outlet stores scattered around, plus their headquarters store in Salt Lake City where you can basically walk in and talk to the people who designed your gear.

One more thing-they actually repair stuff. They offer a Camalot Repair Service where you can get new slings or trigger wires installed on your used cams. In an era where most companies want you to just buy new, that's refreshing. It's also practical-good cams are expensive, and if the metal's still good, why toss it?

So yeah, Black Diamond Equipment. Not the flashiest brand, not the cheapest, but probably the one you'd want if you're actually going to use the gear for what it's designed for. They've been at it since 1989, and they're still here because they make stuff that works. Sometimes that's enough.
