Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Boll & Branch-they basically looked at the bedding industry and said, "We can do this better." And honestly? They kind of did.

The company started back in 2014 when Missy Tannen, a former third-grade teacher, went shopping for sheets and came home frustrated. Her husband Scott, who'd worked at Wrigley and Kraft Foods, had that entrepreneurial itch. Together, they decided to shake things up in an industry that had gotten, well, a little sketchy. The whole "thread count" obsession? Turns out that's mostly marketing fluff. What really matters is the quality of the cotton and how it's woven.

But here's where Boll & Branch gets interesting. They became the first bedding company ever to be Fair Trade Certified. That's not just a nice badge to slap on the website-it means their entire supply chain, from the cotton farms in India to the factories in Kolkata, meets rigorous standards for worker treatment and environmental practices. They use 100% organic cotton, which uses up to 90% less water than conventional cotton farming. And they can trace every product from seed to sheet, which is basically unheard of in this industry.

The business model is pretty clever too. By selling direct-to-consumer online (at least initially), they cut out all the middlemen that typically inflate bedding prices. A king-size sheet set that might cost you $2,000 at a luxury department store? Boll & Branch sells comparable quality for around $250. That's not a typo.

They've grown like crazy-from a self-funded startup to landing a $100 million investment from L Catterton in 2019, one of the biggest consumer-focused private equity firms out there. Today they're pulling in over $200 million in revenue annually and have expanded to 15 retail locations across the country, plus partnerships with Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's.

What's cool is they haven't lost sight of their mission. They still donate about 10% of profits to organizations fighting forced labor in the textile industry. Their "Helping from Home" initiative brings comfort to communities in need. And they've expanded beyond sheets-mattresses, towels, blankets, even furniture-all made with the same ethical standards.

The products themselves? People genuinely love them. The sheets get softer with every wash (which sounds like marketing speak but apparently it's true). They're breathable, they don't pill, and they've landed on Oprah's Favorite Things list. Presidents sleep on them. Celebrities rave about them. But more importantly, regular people who just want a good night's sleep without supporting questionable labor practices can feel good about their purchase.

It's rare to find a company that manages to be both commercially successful and genuinely committed to doing the right thing. Boll & Branch seems to have figured out that you don't have to choose between luxury and ethics, between profit and purpose. And in an industry that's been plagued by opacity and exploitation for generations, that's kind of revolutionary.
