Editor's Take
Here's the thing about BonWorth - it's kind of a bittersweet American retail story. For over 55 years, this was the place where mothers and daughters shopped together, finding comfortable, affordable clothing that actually fit real women's bodies. Not the trendy stuff you'd see plastered all over Instagram, but solid pieces that worked for everyday life.
Founded by Loren Wells back in 1966 in Hendersonville, North Carolina, BonWorth grew into something special. By 2007, they had more than 290 stores scattered across the country. Walk into any outlet mall in the South or Midwest, and you'd probably find one. The brand carved out this niche serving women 50 and older - a demographic that frankly gets ignored by a lot of fashion retailers.
Vermont Country Store has been around since 1946 and knows how to serve a similar customer base - folks who appreciate quality, practical clothing without all the fuss. They've got that whole nostalgic, classic Americana vibe going on. And they're keeping the BonWorth name alive, which matters to the loyal customers who've been shopping there for decades.
The physical stores? Most of them are gone now. BonWorth's shifted to primarily e-commerce, which honestly is where retail's headed anyway. You can still find some BonWorth pieces on resale sites like Poshmark and ThredUp, where they've actually become kind of collectible - that vintage appeal is real.
What made BonWorth work was simple: they understood their customer. Their clothing was designed to fit a diverse range of body types, including misses, petite, women's and plus size. They weren't trying to be everything to everyone. Just comfortable, flattering clothes at outlet prices for women who knew what they liked.
