Books-A-Million isn't just another bookstore chain-it's basically the scrappy underdog of American book retail that somehow became the second-largest book retailer in the nation. And honestly? That's kind of amazing when you think about it.
The whole thing started in 1917 when a 14-year-old kid named Clyde Anderson dropped out of school and started selling newspapers from a makeshift stand in Florence, Alabama. Talk about humble beginnings. What's wild is that he spotted this opportunity because construction workers building the Wilson Dam were complaining they couldn't get their hometown newspapers. So this teenager figured out how to work with publishers and railroads to bring those papers to Florence. That's some serious entrepreneurial spirit right there.
Fast-forward over a century, and Books-A-Million now operates around 260 stores across 32 states. But here's what makes them different from your typical big-box bookstore: they've managed to stay rooted in the Southeast while expanding nationwide, and they've never lost that community feel. You'll find them promoting Southern authors and subjects that matter to their local customers-like college sports, which is basically religion in the South.
The stores themselves are pretty impressive too. We're talking anywhere from 4,000 to 30,000 square feet packed with books, magazines, manga, collectibles, toys, and gifts. Many locations still feature Joe Muggs cafés (though a bunch closed in 2025), so you can grab a coffee while you browse. And if you're into the whole used book scene, they've got their 2nd & Charles division that's been growing like crazy-over 40 stores in 18 states trading used books, games, and pop culture stuff.
What really sets BAM apart is their Millionaire's Club membership program. Members get free shipping on everything, exclusive discounts, and extended return windows. It's one of those loyalty programs that actually feels worth it, especially if you're a regular book buyer.
The company went through some interesting times-went public in the '90s, had their stock price go absolutely bonkers during the dot-com bubble (we're talking from $3 to nearly $47 in a matter of days), then came back down to earth. In 2015, the Anderson family bought the company back and took it private again, which probably explains why they've been able to maintain that family-business feel even at their size.
