Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Breville - they're kind of the Apple of kitchen appliances, and I mean that in the best way possible. You know how some brands just get it? That's Breville.
This Australian company, headquartered in Alexandria, Sydney, has built its reputation on home appliances, specifically blenders, coffee machines, toasters, kettles, microwaves and toaster ovens. But calling them just another appliance maker is like calling a Ferrari just another car. The company was established in 1932, by Bill O'Brien and Harry Norville, who combined their two surnames to form the company name. That's nearly a century of figuring out what actually works in a kitchen.
What really sets them apart is their obsession with coffee. Walk into any serious home barista's kitchen, and there's a decent chance you'll spot that distinctive Breville espresso machine on the counter. This is the brand that has worked so hard to make barista-level brewing accessible at home, with popular options like the Bambino and the Barista Express changing the way we think about sipping espresso-and, in turn, cappuccinos and lattes and Americanos-without leaving the house. They've basically democratized the third-wave coffee experience, which used to require either a commercial-grade machine or a degree in coffee science.
But it's not just about coffee. Their Smart Oven has become something of a cult favorite - it's one of those products that people genuinely get excited about. And their juicers? They're the kind that actually extract juice efficiently without making you feel like you're wrestling with the thing. Breville's R&D team has taken out over 100 active patents and has been awarded more than 40 international design awards. That's not just marketing fluff - you can feel the engineering when you use their products.
The company operates globally now, selling in over 70 countries, though there's an interesting quirk: Breville markets its products worldwide using its namesake Breville brand, except in Europe, where the Sage brand is used. Same products, different name. In North America, Breville USA is the North American subsidiary of Breville that launched in 2002.
What's fascinating is their approach to product development. They don't just make things that look pretty on a countertop (though they do that too). They actually think about the food science behind what you're trying to accomplish. Want to make toast? Sure, but Breville wants to know what kind of toast, how thick the bread is, and whether you're reheating or starting fresh. It's that level of detail that either makes you roll your eyes or makes you a convert.
The price point sits firmly in the premium category - these aren't impulse purchases. But talk to owners and you'll hear the same thing: they last. And when something does go wrong, their customer service actually picks up the phone, which feels increasingly rare these days.
One thing worth noting - they've really leaned into the connected kitchen trend with their Breville+ app, letting you control certain appliances from your phone. Whether that's genuinely useful or just another app cluttering your home screen probably depends on how much you enjoy tinkering with settings.
