So here's the thing about Brilliant Earth-they basically took the whole "blood diamond" problem and said, you know what, we're gonna build an entire company around not doing that. And it worked. Kind of brilliantly, actually.
Beth Gerstein and Eric Grossberg started this back in 2005 after Beth couldn't find an engagement ring that didn't make her feel guilty. She wanted sparkle without the ethical baggage, which-fair. They launched their e-commerce site in 2006, and now they've got showrooms scattered across major cities from San Francisco to New York to Atlanta. We're talking about a company that went public on NASDAQ (ticker: BRLT) and pulls in around $750 million in annual revenue.
But what makes them different? They're obsessed with sourcing. Their natural diamonds come from specific mines-Diavik and Ekati in Canada, plus operations in Namibia and Botswana. They also offer lab-grown diamonds, which is basically the same chemical structure as natural diamonds but created in a controlled environment. Less environmental impact, lower price point. Their gold and platinum? Recycled or sourced from Alliance for Responsible Mining certified co-ops. They even use FSC-certified wood for their ring boxes, which is the kind of detail that makes you realize they're really committed to this whole ethical thing.
The shopping experience is pretty flexible. You can design your own ring online-pick your setting, then your stone, or vice versa. Or book an appointment at one of their 15+ showrooms where a jewelry specialist walks you through the 4 C's (cut, color, clarity, carat) and helps you customize something. They're big on the made-to-order concept, so each piece gets handcrafted by artisans in their San Francisco studio.
And they back it up with some solid policies: 30-day returns, free shipping both ways, lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, and free resizing within the first year. That's not nothing when you're dropping thousands on a ring.
Notice how they've positioned themselves as the anti-establishment jewelry brand? While traditional retailers were still doing the whole "diamonds are forever" thing without talking about where they came from, Brilliant Earth made transparency their entire brand identity. They call their diamonds "Beyond Conflict Free," which goes beyond the Kimberley Process to ensure ethical sourcing throughout the supply chain.
There's been some controversy, though. Back in 2017, a YouTube video questioned whether their "Canadian" diamonds were actually from Canada, and things got messy with lawsuits that were eventually dropped. But they're certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council, and they donate part of their profits to communities affected by conflict diamonds, so they're putting their money where their marketing is.
The company's grown from a two-person startup to nearly 900 employees across multiple continents. They've opened showrooms in places like Cherry Creek in Denver, West Hollywood, and Georgetown in DC. Each location has that modern, light-filled aesthetic-very Instagram-friendly, which probably helps since they've got over 930,000 followers there.
Bottom line? If you want an engagement ring or fine jewelry and you care about where it comes from, Brilliant Earth makes it pretty easy to feel good about your purchase. They've basically created a whole market segment around ethical luxury, and twenty years in, they're still the biggest name in that space.
