Buck Mason started in 2013 out of a 350-square-foot garage in Venice, California, and honestly? That scrappy origin story still defines everything they do today. The brand makes "updated, modern American classics with a commitment to timelessness, quality, and our California roots" - but what does that actually mean when you're standing in your closet at 7 AM?
It means they've figured out something most brands haven't: how to make clothes that work. Buck Mason produces casual basics like t-shirts, denim jeans, blazers, chino pants, and button-up shirts - the kind of stuff you reach for without thinking because you know it'll look right. They combine old-school manufacturing techniques with modern technology to create wardrobe essentials that make it easy to be the best dressed in the room.
The California thing isn't just marketing speak, either. There's this "laid back California ethos of easy living, quality, & simplicity" that runs through everything - from their Made in USA t-shirts and jeans to the way they think about design. Each piece has "a laidback, effortless style that looks as good as it feels".
But here's where it gets interesting: they've got 33 physical stores now, which is pretty remarkable for a brand that started online. Their first store opened in 2015 on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, and they've been thoughtful about expansion ever since. Each location feels like an extension of that original garage - curated, unpretentious, built for people who appreciate quality without the fuss.
The brand got its big break in 2016 when Tom Brady was photographed wearing a Buck Mason t-shirt for GQ's Man of the Year feature. Since then, they've been recommended by Vogue, New York magazine, and Wirecutter - which tells you something about their range. When you can appeal to both fashion editors and gear nerds, you're doing something right.
What really sets them apart is their approach to collaborations. Recent partnerships with Eddie Bauer, J. Mueser, J. Press, and Lee show they're not just making clothes - they're having conversations with heritage brands about what American style means today. That Lee collaboration with Japanese selvedge denim and artwork inspired by the Yokohama Twistin' Club? That's the kind of detail that separates the real ones from the wannabes.
The pricing sits in that sweet spot where you feel the quality but don't need to take out a loan. And with their 365-day return policy, they're basically saying "we're confident you'll love this, but if you don't, no worries." That's the kind of customer service that builds loyalty.
Look, Buck Mason isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. They're just making it rounder, more reliable, and better-looking than most. In a world full of fast fashion and trend-chasing, sometimes the most radical thing you can do is make clothes that'll still look good in five years.
