Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Burberry-it's basically the brand that figured out how to be 168 years old and still feel relevant. Founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, this British luxury house has managed something most heritage brands struggle with: staying iconic without getting stuffy.

The trench coat. You know the one. That gabardine fabric Burberry invented in 1879 wasn't just weatherproof-it literally changed outerwear forever. British officers wore them in the trenches during World War I, and somehow that military practicality translated into timeless elegance. Today, those same coats retail for upwards of $2,000, and people still line up for them.

But what really sets Burberry apart is how they cracked the digital code before anyone else in luxury fashion. Back in 2009, when most high-end brands were treating social media like it might give them a rash, Burberry launched "Art of the Trench"-a user-generated content campaign that basically invented luxury brand community building. They got 7.5 million site views from 150 countries and grew their Facebook following to over a million in a year. That's not just impressive for 2009-that's revolutionary.

And they didn't stop there. Burberry was the first luxury brand to live-stream fashion shows, the first to launch a branded Apple Music channel, and one of the first to go all-in on TikTok with their #TBChallenge campaign that generated 57 million views in one week. They currently allocate around 60% of their marketing budget to digital-a number that would make most luxury brands nervous, but Burberry? They're thriving with it.

The product range has expanded way beyond those famous trench coats and check patterns. Now you're looking at everything from handbags and scarves to fragrances, eyewear, and a full beauty line. They've got men's, women's, and children's collections, all maintaining that distinctly British aesthetic-classic but never boring, luxurious but wearable.

What's interesting is how they've managed to stay exclusive while being accessible. With approximately 400 stores worldwide and a robust e-commerce presence, you can actually buy Burberry without flying to London. Their customer service operates seven days a week with support in multiple languages and platforms-from traditional phone and email to WhatsApp and WeChat. That's the kind of omnichannel approach that most retailers are still trying to figure out.

The brand's also committed to sustainability in ways that matter. In 2021, they announced plans to become "climate positive" by 2040, with a target to reduce supply chain emissions by 46% by 2030. They've even launched services like "Trench Refresh" that clean, repair, and reproof your coat using non-toxic products-basically encouraging you to keep your Burberry pieces forever instead of replacing them.
