Fans of raw cacao, say hello to Morogoro Cacao Powder! After a long two year absence, we’re bringing back a coveted limited supply of this raw, unroasted cacao. Made from naturally fermented and sun-dried cacao beans grown in Tanzania by the Kokoa Kamili cooperative, this minimally processed powder is rich with notes of toasted hazelnut, espresso crema and the bittersweet air of a moonlit walk at midnight. | | The Kokoa Kamili cooperative supplies cocoa beans to well-respected chocolate makers in the US, including Dandelion Chocolate in San Francisco and Raaka in NYC. | | Kokoa Kamili works with over 5,000 smallholder farmers in the Kilombero Valley, providing training, support and cocoa tree seedlings for all their members. In Kokoa Kamili’s first year, member farmers—who had historically received some of the lowest prices for cocoa in the country—received the highest prices in Tanzania for their cocoa. | | As the cacao industry weathers climate change and accompanying crop diseases, chocolate prices have repeatedly spiked to new heights in the last two years, leading many companies to reduce cocoa content in their chocolate products. If you’ve noticed your favorite candy bars get smaller or pricier, or that their labels no longer explicitly say “chocolate,” this is why. | | But as long as real cacao still exists, we’ll keep on delivering it. Morogoro Cacao is phenomenal in baked goods, chocolate puddings and oatmeal, but it’s equally delicious in hearty, savory dishes too. Our customer Debs notes, “I adore the bright flavor of this cocoa. The suggestion to swap it out for paprika in chili is spot on! It’s divine in chili and will bring your hot cocoa to undreamed-of heights. I’m so sad to know this is limited!” | | Questions? Feedback? Ideas? We love to hear from you. Just reply to this email.
