In This Newsletter: Orange Ghost Chilis Return! Spice Level, Tasting Notes, Hot Honey Tip
Get ready to feel the heat: 300 jars of limited-edition Orange Ghost Chilis have just landed! Each jar contains 5 whole chilis, sitting at around 325,000 Scoville units of heat—on par with a properly hot habanero. Spicier when fresh and sweeter once dried, these citrusy Orange Ghosts carry full fruity notes of sun-dried tomato, toffee and caramel milk chocolate.
A hybrid variety of the bhut jolokia superhot that originated in northeast India, this special harvest of Orange Ghosts Chilis comes from Fire Tongue Farms in California, where partner farmers Ryan and Levon fully ripen all their chili peppers on the vine to maximize heat, sugar content and color. Ryan and Levon also supply our Smoked Chipotle, Red Jalapeño and heirloom Arapaho Cayenne.
Levon explains: “While ghost peppers are typically only recommended for the bravest of chili eaters, this one should be accessible for people who can handle varieties with reasonable amounts of heat such as a Cayenne or Habanero." For the thrill-seeking chiliheads who want to taste these straight: choose your own spice level adventure as you travel up the pepper!
Start with a tiny nibble at the tip and travel towards the stem. The Orange Ghost creeps gradually from sweet candy-like heat to their eponymous “superhot” intensity. Have a glass of milk ready and proceed with caution: once you hit the white pith, prepare yourself for the hottest heat! As with all spicy chilis, we recommend wearing gloves while handling these peppers and diligent washing of hands and utensils used, to avoid inadvertent skin reactions.
Drop a single Orange Ghost Chiliinto a jar of Amber Woodland Honey to enjoy in the form of a DIY hot honey that can go on all your summer feasts and treats! Give the jar a stir with a clean utensil every day and check in on the heat as it infuses. Remove the chili once you reach your desired spice level (and save it for a pot of spicy beans or slow-braise!).
