| No images? Click here Volume 29, Issue #19 | June 27, 2025 We're collectively tumbling into a time filled with anticipation, collaboration and sooooo many spreadsheets. There's a city to build... one with an airport, multiple orchestras, gyms and libraries... and at least one larger-than-life pangolin. Back in 1986 a small group of friends gathered on the solstice to burn a wooden Man. Today, Burning Man ignites passionate, creative communities around the world. From Finland to Tanzania, Burners gather across ideologies and traditions to make their dreams manifest. To mark Burning Man's birthday, the Reno Gazette-Journal published Burning Man Project CEO Marian Goodellβs piece Why Burning Man Still Matters in Today's Fractured World. Read it and feel inspired, right below. There's no end to the wonders that come to life in Black Rock City. What do YOU want to create? Center Camp is calling for instigators, creators and producers to bring their ideas to life beneath the Canopy. And speaking of airports, now is your chance to join the Black Rock City Municipal Airport crew. Scroll for all the forms. The OMG Sale β the final sale to acquire Black Rock City 2025 tickets β is one month away. Registration begins June 21 and the sale opens June 30. Jump below for details. Coming in early July, be sure to watch Desert Arts Preview for scintillating interviews and behind-the-scenes-glimpses as artists prepare their awe-inspiring work for Tomorrow Today. And on July 22, gather 'round for the 2025 Sustainability Report to hear from the humans leading sustainability efforts in Black Rock City. What's your favorite playa breakfast? Tell us about it on social with the hashtag #burningmanseen. Why Burning Man Still Matters in Today's Fractured World Thirty-nine years ago on the solstice, Burning Man founder Larry Harvey gathered with friends to burn the first Man on a beach in San Francisco. Last week to mark the moment, Burning Man Project CEO Marian Goodell by-lined a piece in the Reno Gazette-Journal, proposing Burning Manβs creative culture as a path forward to resolving differences in todayβs divided world. In the piece, Marian writes: As institutions struggle to retain trust and public discourse breaks down, people are seeking something more elemental: shared values, common purpose, a reason to believe in each other. The 10 Principles of Burning Man are not a blueprint β theyβre a compass. They remind us that itβs possible to include without agreeing, to lead without dominating, to create without permission. They picture it to be an exchange; or they stock up on physical objects to give away. Both of these misconceptions have good intentions, but they miss the essence of giving and receiving gifts at Burning Man. Gifting is Unconditional, Not an Exchange or Transaction The Gifting principle clears up the first misconception: Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value. Beyond Burning Man, day-to-day life can seem transactional. When you come to Black Rock City or a Regional Event, it can take practice to shift to an unconditional gifting mindset. To freely offer or receive a gift stands on its own with no need or expectation to reciprocate. When this shift hits home, prepare to experience generosity and grace. Gifting Time, Presence or Knowledge is More Powerful than Giving Stuff Burners do love swag and patches and stickers; your new friends and campmates will covet and share a well-thought-out playa gift. BUT please do not bring a backpack filled with wasteful plastic tchotchkes to distribute far and wide. Many of these will end up as Matter Out of Place (MOOP) on playa or in people's lives. Even better... and often more appreciated is gifting your time, your presence, or your expertise. Help your neighbor put up their tent. Lend a supportive ear to someone who needs to be heard. Bring a quirky piece of art. Non-material gifts cultivate connection and playa magic in ways that far transcend a dusty bracelet. On July 20, 2019, Burning Man Project published the 2030 Environmental Sustainability Roadmap and committed to three goals: 1) Handle Waste Ecologically, 2) Be Regenerative, and 3) Be Carbon Negative β all by 2030. Burners are not just imagining a better future; we're prototyping it, scaling it, and inviting everyone to co-create the systems and culture needed to reach these goals. Now, six years in and halfway to 2030, sustainability work is in a transition between experimentation and scale. This call is a chance to align, accelerate, and build the next phase β together.
