| No images? Click here Volume 29, Issue #27 | August 14, 2025 Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them. Every human who touches down in Black Rock City has a role in minimizing the collective ecological impact on the Black Rock Desert and on the Earth. Black Rock City has always been a laboratory for sustainable innovation. The Burning Man Project nonprofit is making exciting progress towards the 2030 Roadmap, which outlines three goals: No matter out of place; Be regenerative; Be carbon negative. Event operations have significantly reduced use of fossil fuels through solar and battery-powered infrastructure, renewable fuels and other innovations. This work serves as inspiration for other events, and for the world. Participants continue to learn, innovate and collectively reduce their impact through initiatives such as the Green Theme Camp Community, Renewables for Artists Team (RAT) and Burner Leadership Achieving Sustainable Theme Camps (BLAST). Be sure to drop by the Green Corridor this year to visit camps that are innovating around regenerative practices and technologies. Details for getting involved are below! If you're headed to the dust, listen up! There is no trash collection service in Black Rock City. Everything you bring, including the trash you create, must return with you. Make it easy on yourself by removing all excess packaging from your stuff before you hit the road to Black Rock City. EVERYTHING you bring to the playa can become Matter Out of Place (MOOP) if you don't pick it up. When you're all packed up and ready to leave, secure the load on your vehicle so nothing blows away. Please only drop off trash and recycling at one of these Burner-friendly disposal sites (this list is also on the back of your WhatWhereWhen guide and in your Survival Guide). But wait, there's more. Playa Restoration is looking for superstar Burners to stay in the desert and make sure Black Rock City leaves no trace. Apply below! While you're here, expand your mind by watching the recording of our 2025 Sustainability Update. It's all happening, friends. Buck up, little camper. You can still go to Black Rock City. Tickets are available here, at $950 and up β no registration necessary. Forgot to buy a vehicle pass? Get one here without also buying a ticket. Pack all the things! What You Need to Know...
A Vision for a Regenerative Future in Black Rock City & Beyond Black Rock City teams are decarbonizing event operations and working closely with theme camps, communities, and organizations that are making the transition to a more sustainable city possible. At Fly Ranch, Burning Man Project is building a year-round rural center as a laboratory for the community to develop climate-resilient food, water, power, shelter, and waste systems. Burners Without Borders and Regional Network communities are empowering leaders and putting sustainability ideas into action around the world. (Photo by Liza Welsh) Pick Up Matter Out of Place Daily. Here's How. If you are a citizen of Black Rock City this year, then YOU are assigned the noble task of picking up Matter Out of Place (MOOP) in your campsite, at your project, and everywhere else. Every tiny thing that is not originally part of the Black Rock Desert is MOOP β that means wood chips, cigarette butts, zipties, little scraps of paper... Don't let it hit the ground! Be sure to MOOP sweep daily! Here's How: Gather your campmates and line up, arms-width apart, along your camp boundary. Walk together from one side of camp to the other, picking up any MOOP you find along the way. Use cleanup tools such as reacher/grabbers (MOOP sticks), rakes, metal shovels, trash cans, and magnet sweepers to make the job easier. Perform MOOP sweeps:
(Photo by Manuel Pinto) Mark and Pull Up ALL Your Stakes, Rebar and Lag Bolts Since 2022, Black Rock City has had a new number one MOOP item. Tent stakes, rebar and lag bolts are being left in the ground at an alarming rate. It's up to all of us to flag our stakes during build so we can find them again during strike. SO add some of that brightly-colored flagging tape to your packing list! Read "Leaving No Trace the Playa Restoration Way" (Photo courtesy of DA) Green Your Burn with the Green Theme Camp Resource Guide Thereβs no one-size-fits-all solution to minimizing your environmental footprint β every campβs path will look a little different depending on size, needs, and budget. The Green Theme Camp Community's Resource Guide is a flexible framework for building a more sustainable camp in Black Rock City. Browse best practices by resource area; each section is filled with links to detailed guides, videos, tools, and resources to help you along the way. Register for the 2025 Black Rock Compost Program The Black Rock Compost Program is back, with three locations across the city where participants and camps can drop off their compostable food waste 3pm to 6pm daily during Burn Week. Help them out by registering your camp in advance.
