| No images? Click here Volume 28, Issue #25 | August 10, 2024 There's no way to prepare emotionally for the magnitude and sheer beauty of an art-filled playa. Whether it's your first Burn or your 20th; whether you've given yourself a sneak peek of the work that will be out there, or you prefer to be surprised... It's always mind-blowing to see the artwork in Black Rock City come to life in the dust. The works that illuminate the night and draw you closer, the awe and the tears, never happen the way you expect they will. It's always new and unexpected. Every year, hundreds of art crews devote their year to imagining, engineering, planning, building, and bringing their work to Black Rock City. They do it for free, out of love. Some of the artworks have been shipped from faraway continents. Some are built by hand by just one person, devoting evenings and weekends to make it real. And then they converge along that dusty road — artists, builders, friends and family bring a dream to life for the citizens of this raucous city to explore together. Ready? Inspired? You can be a part of the world's biggest art adventure. Get your ticket to Burning Man now, below. Read about the joy of creating small art in this Burning Man Journal post. Respect for the Art: It Goes Without Saying, But… Did you know that each piece of art on playa has been created and funded by artists and their communities, and is a gift from artists to Black Rock City? Please keep this in mind when interacting with artwork. Look for signs posted by artists that may ask you not to climb or write on their work, and be respectful of their wishes. Also... please, please do not use artwork as a toilet. Do Not Lock Your Bike to the Art It’s hard to believe it, but every year people lock their bikes to art installations... as if they were giant bike racks. Which they’re not. Sometimes this results in a) the lock being cut before the piece is burned or taken down, or b) the bike being burned with the piece. Avoid this situation by — guess what? Right. Not locking your bike to the artwork.
