| No images? Click here Volume 29, Issue #25 | August 6, 2025 There is nothing quite like that first glimpse of the open playa, where artworks rise from the dust like mirages made real. Whether you’ve studied the art listings online obsessively or prefer to be surprised as you let serendipity guide your wandering, the moment when imagination becomes reality never loses its power to stop you in your tracks. Behind every artwork that will soon populate Black Rock City lies months of passionate dedication from artists, builders, makers, and of course their families and friends who jump in to help. Some artworks travel thousands of miles to reach the playa. Most are lovingly crafted in garages and workshops by small crews working early and late. All of them share the same wild ambition to create something extraordinary that they give away to a city that exists for a little over a week. When these dreams finally roll through the gate and take their place in Black Rock City's dusty gallery, they become more than art… they become gathering points, conversation starters, places where strangers become friends and friends become family. Most artists are still working to fund their final push to the playa. Your support can help bring these visions to life. Check out some of the projects that need your help below. Since this is our special Art issue, we’ve also gathered essential wisdom and pro tips for your creative adventure. In fact, it’s not too late for YOU to bring art as your gift! Did you forget to buy a vehicle pass? Rejoice! Individual vehicle passes are now available on their own without a ticket. But if you DO need a ticket, they're available here at $950 and up. Respect for the Art: It Goes Without Saying, But… Did you know that each piece of art on playa has been created and funded by artists and their communities, and is a gift from artists to Black Rock City? Please keep this in mind when interacting with artwork. Look for signs posted by artists that may ask you not to climb or write on their work, and be respectful of their wishes. Also... please, please do not use artwork as a toilet. It’s hard to believe it, but every year people lock their bikes to art installations... as if they were giant bike racks. Which they’re not. Sometimes this results in a) the lock being cut before the piece is burned or taken down, or b) the bike being burned with the piece. Avoid this situation by — guess what? Right. Not locking your bike to the artwork.
