Many people who go to Black Rock City or participate in Regional Events around the world report feeling deep sense of well-being and safety. When we come together to create and share space, we connect more deeply and take care of each other — in our camps, through our playa gifts, and on a large scale thanks to Black Rock Rangers, Emergency Medical Services, and other teams who prioritize caring for participants. That said, Black Rock City takes place in one of the most challenging and unforgiving environments you will experience. The joke is: the Black Rock Desert is one of the most strikingly beautiful and utterly ethereal locations in the world that will ever try to kill you. We need to look out for each other and take care of ourselves much more attentively than we normally would. In the spirit of Radical Self-reliance, in Black Rock City you'll find essential safety infrastructure. But ultimately, YOU are responsible for your personal health and safety. In this edition, we’ve got everything you need to know about taking care of yourself — and what services are available, should the need arise. But that ain't all; follow the handy links below for important safety information. There are several new ways for you to get important information and help in Black Rock City during an emergency — scroll for the goods. What's that? You JUST decided to go to Burning Man? Get your tickets here! Personal Survival Checklist There are 1,001 Burning Man gear checklists out there on the internet. Each contains its unique flavor of playa wisdom. We've created the survival checklist linked below with your health, safety and Radical Self-reliance in mind. Every individual must bring everything on the You Must Bring list — that includes common sense, an open mind, a sense of humor and a positive attitude. New Ways to Get Important Info During an Emergency For 2024, here are a few new ways to access the latest information if there is an emergency that impacts Black Rock citizens:
Take Steps to Beat the Heat! While it's a little early to predict what the temperatures will be in Black Rock City this year, one thing we're sure of: it will be hot. A hat, sunscreen and maybe a fancy parasol will all help you stay cool in peak heat. Take it slow during the hottest hours of the day. Seek well-ventilated shade and drink water. Be sure to get help if you're experiencing headaches, stomach cramps, abdominal pains, flu-like symptoms or mood swings. You’re sick or hurt in Black Rock City. What are your options? The first thing you should do is determine whether you can treat yourself using a personal or camp first aid kit. If your illness or injury is more severe than you can manage yourself, ask your campmates for assistance. Alternatively, go to one of our medical stations at 3:00+C and 9:00+C or Rampart at 5:15 and Esplanade. Look for the large red crosses. Any Black Rock Ranger (look for the khaki shirts) or ESD (look for the yellow shirts) staff, or anyone you see with a radio can help you in finding the right care. Costs Can Be Significant if You're Transported Off Playa This potentially life-saving ride is the one nobody wants to take: an emergency medical transport to one of the Reno hospitals. Once your injury is fixed, even with insurance, you still may face significant out-of-pocket expenses. Chances are good you’ll never need it, but if you have a complicated pre-existing condition or are a good little scout and believe in preparedness, get yourself some medevac insurance. What Do You Do if it Rains in Black Rock City? Long, sustained rainfall is uncommon, but storm cells may bring high winds, lightning and rain; you should be mentally and logistically prepared for this. Bring a bucket (in case the porta-potties are out of commission), pack for cold weather, bring all the food/medicine you need, bring a battery or solar-powered radio. BMIR (94.5 FM) broadcasts news and announcements at the top of the hour. Survival Health Consent, Sexual Misconduct & Zendo More Questions?
