You know that feeling when you walk into a store and it's basically a theme park? That's Cabela's. Founded back in 1961 by Dick Cabela with just $45 worth of fishing flies, this place has grown into something kind of legendary in the outdoor world. And honestly, it's not hard to see why.
Here's the thing about Cabela's-it's not your average sporting goods store. Walk into any location and you're greeted by massive taxidermy displays, walk-through aquariums stocked with native fish, and these towering "Conservation Mountains" complete with waterfalls. Some stores have over 100 trophy animals on display. It's basically part museum, part retail experience, part family destination. Kids love counting all the animals while parents actually shop for gear.
The selection is genuinely impressive. We're talking everything from fly fishing rods to duck hunting gear to camping equipment to boats and ATVs. They carry top brands like Shimano, PENN, Sitka, Yeti, and Carhartt, plus their own Cabela's-branded stuff that's earned a solid reputation over the decades. The stores are massive too-some locations push 250,000 square feet. That's bigger than most shopping malls.
But here's what really sets them apart: the staff actually knows their stuff. They call them "Outfitters," and many are genuine outdoor enthusiasts who can tell you which lure works best for walleye in your local lake or how to properly sight in a bow. That expertise matters when you're dropping serious money on outdoor gear.
Now, Cabela's got acquired by Bass Pro Shops back in 2017, so they're technically the same company now. The stores still operate under the Cabela's name though, and they've kept that destination-store vibe that made them famous. Over 160 locations across North America, each one designed to reflect the local outdoor culture and wildlife.
The company's also big on conservation efforts and military discounts-they offer 10% off to veterans, active military, and first responders through their Legendary Salute program. And if you're into loyalty programs, their CLUB card earns you points on purchases that you can redeem later.
One more thing worth mentioning: these stores have become legitimate tourist attractions. The original Bass Pro Shops location in Springfield, Missouri (where Cabela's headquarters now sits) draws four million visitors annually. People plan road trips around visiting Cabela's stores. That's pretty wild for a retail chain.
So yeah, whether you're a serious hunter, weekend camper, or just someone who appreciates a good aquarium, Cabela's delivers an experience that goes way beyond typical shopping. It's outdoor retail done big, done right, and done with genuine passion for getting people outside.
