So here's the thing about Canada Goose - it's basically become the jacket that everyone recognizes, but most people don't know the full story behind it. Founded way back in 1957 in a small Toronto warehouse by a Polish-Jewish immigrant named Sam Tick, the company started out making wool vests and raincoats under the name Metro Sportswear. Pretty humble beginnings for what's now a luxury brand, right?
But what really set them apart was their obsession with extreme weather. Like, we're talking Antarctica-level cold. In the 1980s, they developed the Expedition Parka specifically for scientists at McMurdo Station in Antarctica - one of the coldest places on earth. That jacket became standard issue and got nicknamed "Big Red." And that's kind of been their whole vibe ever since: if it can keep you warm in Antarctica, it'll definitely handle your commute.
The brand really exploded in the 2000s when they started showing up in movies (The Day After Tomorrow, National Treasure) and on the backs of celebrities. Revenue jumped from around $3 million in 1991 to $17.5 million by 2008, and they just kept growing. By 2017, they went public on both the Toronto and New York stock exchanges. Today, they've got stores in major cities worldwide - New York, Chicago, Toronto, Beijing, Paris, Milan - and employ over 3,800 people globally.
What's interesting is how they've evolved. They used to be all about those heavy-duty parkas, but now they're making knitwear, footwear, lightweight jackets, even sneakers. They acquired the bootmaker Baffin in 2018 and launched their Generations program where you can buy pre-owned Canada Goose products. And they've had to adapt on the ethics front too - they stopped buying new fur in 2021 and committed to using 90% preferred fibers and materials by 2025.
The price point is definitely up there (think $1,000+ for a parka), which is why they partnered with Klarna for payment plans. Gen Z shoppers especially love that option. And speaking of Gen Z, they've been crushing it with that demographic - a quarter of their online sales now come from Gen Z customers, who also spend the most time on their website and have the highest conversion rates.
One thing that's kind of cool: they still manufacture in Canada. That "Made in Canada" commitment is a huge part of their brand identity, even as they've expanded globally. They've got manufacturing facilities in Toronto, Winnipeg, and Montreal, and the Canadian government once recognized them for employing 6% of the country's cut-and-sew labor industry.
The stores themselves are pretty experiential. Many locations have these "Cold Rooms" where you can actually test out the jackets in sub-zero temperatures - some go as low as -10°F with actual snowstorms. It's like a winter wonderland in the middle of a mall. Pretty smart way to let people experience what they're paying for.
