Editor's Take

You know Canon-or at least you think you do. That red-and-white logo has been everywhere for decades, basically synonymous with cameras and printers. But here's the thing: Canon's way more than just the brand your parents used for vacation photos or the office printer that always seems to jam at the worst possible time.

Founded way back in 1937 in Japan, Canon's been in the imaging game longer than most companies have existed. And they've kind of mastered it. We're talking cameras that range from your basic point-and-shoot to professional cinema-grade equipment that's been used to film actual Hollywood movies. The EOS line alone has become legendary among photographers-both the folks shooting weddings on weekends and the pros capturing magazine covers.

But Canon's reach goes way beyond cameras. Their printer division is massive, with everything from those compact home printers to industrial-grade machines that can handle serious volume. The PIXMA line has become a household name, and their professional imagePROGRAF printers are the go-to for graphic designers and architects who need precision. They've also got MEGATANK printers that come with up to two years of ink in the box-which, honestly, is kind of a game-changer when you think about how fast ink cartridges usually run out.

What's interesting is how Canon has evolved with technology. They're not stuck in the film era (though they dominated that too). Their mirrorless camera systems are competing head-to-head with anyone in the market, and they've been investing heavily in things like medical imaging equipment and semiconductor manufacturing tools. Canon U.S.A., headquartered in that massive LEED Gold-certified building in Melville, New York, employs thousands of people and has been a fixture on Long Island since the early 1970s.

The company's also weirdly committed to sustainability-their headquarters uses natural lighting for 75 percent of occupied spaces and has water-efficient fixtures that cut consumption by 35 percent. It's not just corporate greenwashing either; they've been at it for years with their "Kyosei" philosophy, which basically means everyone living and working together harmoniously. Kind of refreshing, actually.

And if you're wondering about support, Canon's got that covered too. They offer 100 percent U.S.-based customer service, which is increasingly rare these days. You can actually call them and talk to someone who knows what they're talking about, whether you're dealing with a camera issue or trying to figure out why your printer won't connect to Wi-Fi.

So yeah, Canon's one of those companies that's been around forever but somehow manages to stay relevant. Whether you're a professional photographer, a small business owner who needs reliable printing, or just someone who wants a decent camera for capturing life's moments, they've probably got something that fits. And with over 170 million RF and EF lenses produced, they're clearly doing something right.
