So here's the thing about CELINE-it's one of those brands that's been around forever (since 1945, actually) but somehow never feels dated. And that's kind of remarkable when you think about it.
The story starts in Paris with Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard, who opened a children's shoe boutique. Yeah, children's shoes. Their original logo was a red elephant, which is about as far from today's minimalist aesthetic as you can get. But by 1960, they'd pivoted to women's ready-to-wear, and that's when things got interesting.
Fast forward to 1996, and LVMH-the luxury conglomerate behind Louis Vuitton, Dior, and basically every other high-end brand you can think of-acquired CELINE for about $540 million. That's when the brand really started its transformation into the powerhouse it is today, with 178 boutiques worldwide.
But here's where it gets really good. In 2008, Phoebe Philo took over as creative director, and she basically invented what we now call "quiet luxury" before it even had a name. Her designs were all about refined minimalism-think sharp tailoring, neutral palettes, and pieces that whispered elegance rather than shouting it. She created iconic bags like the Luggage Tote and the Trapeze that became instant classics. Women everywhere were obsessed because Philo seemed to understand exactly what they wanted: sophisticated pieces that were actually wearable.
Then in 2018, Hedi Slimane stepped in and shook everything up. He dropped the accent from Céline (now just CELINE), introduced menswear for the first time in the brand's history, and brought a totally different vibe-edgier, more rock-and-roll, with glittery party dresses and leather jackets. Some people loved it, others missed the Philo era. The fashion world basically split into camps.
What makes CELINE special is that it's managed to stay relevant through all these changes. Whether you're into the minimalist Philo aesthetic or Slimane's bolder approach, there's something undeniably CELINE about it all-that French luxury DNA, the impeccable craftsmanship, the attention to detail. The brand's Triomphe monogram, introduced in 1971, remains iconic.
Today you can find CELINE not just in their standalone boutiques but also at luxury retailers like Bergdorf Goodman and Nordstrom. And while a CELINE bag will set you back a pretty penny, it's the kind of investment piece that actually holds its value. The brand has mastered that sweet spot between timeless and contemporary, classic and cool.
