Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Chaco-they're not just making sandals. They're basically building a cult following, and honestly? It makes sense.
Born in 1989 as an American footwear brand known for adjustable Z-strap sandals for outdoor and water use, Chaco has since expanded to offer outdoor-influenced fashion sandals, shoes, flip-flops, boots and accessories. But what really sets them apart is this wild engineering detail: their flagship adjustable outdoor sandals use a single strap that loops around the foot through the sole, so they can be adjusted to fit without any extra fastenings. Like, think about that for a second. One continuous strap. No buckles breaking, no Velcro wearing out. Just pure, adjustable simplicity.
And people are obsessed. For more than 25 years, Chaco has been creating men's hiking sandals fit for any adventures over land, sea and everything in between. The brand started with a river guide who needed something better, and that origin story still shows. These aren't fashion-first sandals that happen to work outdoors-they're outdoor-first sandals that happen to look good.
Here's where it gets interesting: Born on the river in 1989, Chaco builds premium footwear for the outdoor-minded, and as a result of the brand's proprietary LUVSEAT footbed, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) has awarded the Seal of Acceptance to all Chaco footwear styles. All of them. That's not just marketing fluff-podiatrists are notoriously picky, and getting that seal means your footbed actually does something for foot health.
The company's had an interesting journey. A factory was established in Paonia, Colorado, but in 2008 the Paonia factory closed and production was moved to China. In 2009, the brand was acquired by Wolverine World Wide, and the Chaco facilities moved to the Wolverine base in Rockford, Michigan. Some purists grumbled about the China manufacturing move, but Chaco kept their repair program going strong-and that's kind of their secret weapon.
They offer a repair service, which is huge in an era of disposable everything. Your Chacos get worn down? Send them back. They'll resole them, replace straps, basically give them new life. It's called ReChaco, and it's the kind of thing that turns customers into evangelists. You're not just buying sandals-you're buying sandals you can theoretically wear forever.
The fit thing is real, though. These aren't slip-on-and-go sandals. There's a learning curve to adjusting that continuous strap system, and some people never quite get it dialed in. But once you do? They mold to your feet in this weirdly personal way. You'll see people with tan lines that are basically Chaco-branded onto their feet by August-it's become a badge of honor in the outdoor community.
What's kind of brilliant is how Chaco's positioned themselves. They're not trying to be Teva (more athletic, more technical) or Birkenstock (more casual, more fashion). They're somewhere in the middle-technical enough for serious hiking, comfortable enough for everyday wear, and distinctive enough that people recognize them instantly. That Z-strap pattern has become iconic.
And the community around them is intense. People collect different strap patterns. They customize them on the website. They argue passionately about toe loop versus no toe loop (it's a whole thing). Chaco recently launched the CushZ Sandal, combining comfort, sustainability and lightweight design. They're constantly innovating while keeping that core DNA intact.
Bottom line? Chaco figured out how to make a sandal that's genuinely good at multiple things-river trips, hiking, casual wear-and built a repair program that keeps people coming back. In a world of planned obsolescence, that's kind of revolutionary. Plus, those tan lines are basically free advertising.
