Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Champion-most people know the logo, but not everyone knows the story. And honestly? It's kind of wild.
We're talking about a brand that literally invented the hoodie. Like, the actual hoodie. Back in the 1930s, when the Feinbloom Brothers were running what would become Champion, they created this revolutionary garment to keep athletes warm on cold sidelines. Fast forward to today, and that same piece of clothing is in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. That's not nothing.
The company was established in 1919 by the Feinbloom Brothers as Knickerbocker Knitting Company. They started by making uniforms for the Michigan Wolverines, which basically launched the entire collegiate apparel industry as we know it. But Champion didn't stop there. They invented the Reverse Weave sweatshirt in the 1930s-cutting fabric on the cross-grain to prevent shrinkage. Coaches had been complaining about uniforms shrinking in the wash, and Champion just... solved it. Simple problem, genius solution.
Then there's the sports bra. Champion didn't invent it (that credit goes to Lisa Lindahl, Hinda Miller, and Polly Smith with the Jogbra), but they acquired it and helped make it mainstream. Champion was the official outfitter of the NBA from 1989-2001, and the official WNBA outfitter from 1997-2001. Those iconic NBA jerseys from the '90s? All Champion. The 1992 Dream Team? Champion.
But here's where it gets interesting. Champion went through this whole journey-from athletic powerhouse to kind of fading into the background, then roaring back as streetwear in the '90s when hip-hop culture embraced it. New York City became ground zero for Champion as fashion, not just function. The brand that dressed Olympic athletes was suddenly the uniform of choice for a completely different kind of cool.
In June 2024, Hanesbrands announced plans to sell the Champion brand to Authentic Brands for $1.2 billion. On October 1, it was announced that the transaction had been completed. So Champion's entering yet another chapter, now under Authentic Brands Group-the same company that owns Reebok and manages David Beckham's brand partnerships.
What makes Champion stick around after more than a century? It's that they keep solving actual problems. The Reverse Weave for shrinkage. Mesh jerseys for ventilation. And recently, they launched a weighted hoodie designed for mental health and anxiety relief, developed after surveying consumers and finding that over 90% were interested in calming techniques through clothing.
The brand generates nearly $3 billion in global retail sales annually and operates in more than 90 countries. But walk into any Target or department store, and you'll find Champion right there-accessible, reliable, and still innovating. It's not trying to be luxury. It's trying to be useful.
And maybe that's the real story. Champion isn't chasing trends; it's creating solutions that happen to become trends. From the sidelines to the streets to your everyday wardrobe, it just keeps showing up.
