Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Checkers & Rally's-they're basically the same restaurant with different names depending on where you live, which is kind of genius when you think about it. Originally separate companies serving different geographic areas (with Checkers serving the Southeast and Rally's serving the Midwest), Checkers and Rally's merged in August 1999. But they kept both names because, well, why mess with brand recognition?

What makes them stand out isn't just their dual identity-it's their whole approach to fast food. Most locations specialize in carryout service with drive-through and "walk-up" windows available, but no indoor seating, which was pretty revolutionary back in the day. They figured out that people wanted speed and convenience, not necessarily a place to sit down and contemplate their burger choices.

And speaking of burgers, The Big Buford® is Checkers' most famous burger! It comes with two juicy beef patties, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, mayo, and mustard on a toasted bun. It's a fan favorite for a reason! But honestly, their fries might be even more famous. Checkers is famous for its Seasoned Fries-crispy, golden, and full of bold seasoning. They've actually won awards for these things-"#1 Most Craveable Fries" by Restaurant Business.

The company operates restaurants in 28 states and the District of Columbia, which is pretty impressive for a chain that started in the mid-80s. Checkers was founded in 1986 in Mobile, Alabama by Jim Mattei, while Rally's was founded in Louisville, Kentucky in 1985 by Jim Patterson.

What's interesting is how they've positioned themselves in the market. Checkers & Rally's was born out of the idea that boring and bland have no place in the burger world. That's why we've been slinging the best burgers, crispiest fries, and the creamiest milkshakes for a price that is hard to beat. And because we believe flavor shouldn't have a timeline, we're open late every night of the week.

That late-night angle is smart-they're not trying to compete directly with McDonald's for the breakfast crowd or the lunch rush. Instead, they're going after people who want something decent when everything else is closed. It's a niche that's served them well, especially with their double drive-thru setup that keeps lines moving even during busy periods.
