Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Chicago-it's kind of impossible to pin down in just one way. Chicago has been named the Best Big City in the U.S. for a historic ninth year in a row, and honestly? Once you spend time there, you get it.

The city sits right on Lake Michigan's southwestern shore, which gives it this weird duality of being both a major urban center and having actual beaches. Like, you can be standing in front of a skyscraper one minute and have your toes in the sand the next. In 2023, Chicago saw 51.96 million tourist arrivals, and tourism expenditure set a new record at $19.2 billion-those aren't small numbers for a Midwestern city.

But what really makes Chicago interesting is how it's basically 77 different neighborhoods stitched together, each with its own personality. You've got Bronzeville with its deep African American history, Humboldt Park bursting with Puerto Rican culture, and Pullman-which is actually a National Monument now. The food scene alone could keep you busy for months. Deep dish pizza, sure, but also some seriously world-class restaurants that have earned Michelin stars.

In 2017, Millennium Park alone saw 25 million visitors, making it the top tourist destination in the Midwest. And that's just one park. There's Navy Pier, the Art Institute (which is legitimately one of the best art museums in the country), the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium-basically, if you're into museums, Chicago's got you covered.

The architecture is another thing entirely. This is where the skyscraper was basically invented, and you can still see that legacy everywhere. The Chicago River runs right through downtown, and taking an architecture boat tour is one of those touristy things that's actually worth doing because the guides really know their stuff.

What's interesting is how accessible everything is. The "L" train system (that's what locals call it) connects pretty much the whole city, so you're not stuck in one area. You can start your morning in the Loop, grab lunch in Chinatown, catch a Cubs game at Wrigley Field in the afternoon, and end up at a jazz club in the evening. All doable.

The city's also got this interesting mix of old-school Midwest charm and big-city sophistication. People are generally friendly-not in a fake way, but in that Midwestern "we'll help you figure out the train system" kind of way. And the cultural scene is legitimately impressive. Come immerse yourself in Chicago's dynamic cultural scene, from genre-defying theatre to blockbuster art exhibits.

One more thing-Chicago's not resting on its laurels. The city keeps evolving, with new restaurants opening, neighborhoods getting revitalized, and cultural institutions expanding. It's got that energy of a place that's confident in what it is but still hungry to be better.
