Editor's Take

So here's the thing about City Chic - they're kind of the anti-establishment player in plus-size fashion, and honestly? It's about time someone shook things up.

Founded in Sydney back in 1999 as a single boutique, City Chic has basically spent the last two decades proving that curvy women deserve the same fashion-forward, sexy, unapologetically bold clothing that straight-size brands have been hoarding forever. Their tagline "Cut for Curves. Always." isn't just marketing fluff - they actually design exclusively for plus-size bodies rather than just scaling up smaller sizes. And if you've ever tried on plus-size clothing from brands that clearly don't understand how bodies work, you know that's a massive difference.

The brand operates in this interesting sweet spot between contemporary fashion and accessible pricing. They're not trying to be your grandmother's plus-size store (you know the ones - tucked in the back corner of the mall with questionable floral prints). Instead, City Chic pulls prints from art houses in London, Paris, and New York, creates pieces that actually conceal and reveal in the right places, and somehow manages to make you feel like you're shopping at a high-end boutique without the boutique price tag.

Here's what's particularly interesting: as of January 2024, they operate 90 stores across Australia and New Zealand, plus they've got a robust online presence that ships globally. They tried breaking into the US market with physical stores in California back in 2014, but those eventually closed - though their online business in the States is still going strong. They're also listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, which gives them serious credibility and growth potential.

The size range typically runs from 14-24 (or 10-26 depending on the market), covering everything from workwear to wedding dresses to activewear. And not just basic stuff - we're talking sequined gowns, leather jackets, swimwear that doesn't look like your aunt's bathing suit, and lingerie that's actually sexy. Their denim collection alone is worth checking out, with styles specifically designed for different body shapes like the Asha Jeans for apple shapes and Harley Jeans for hourglass curves.

Notice how they've also been smart about acquisitions? They've picked up brands like Hips & Curves, Avenue, and Evans, basically building a plus-size fashion empire while other retailers were still figuring out that curvy women have money to spend. The company rebranded as City Chic Collective in 2018, signaling their evolution from a single brand to a multi-brand powerhouse.

But it's not all sunshine and sequins. Customer reviews are mixed - some people absolutely love the quality and fit, while others complain about inconsistent sizing and declining fabric quality in recent years. The return policy requires customers to pay for return shipping (around $7.95), which can add up if you're ordering multiple sizes to find the right fit. And their customer service seems to be hit or miss, with some customers praising quick responses while others report frustrating experiences.

Still, for plus-size women tired of settling for whatever scraps the fashion industry throws their way, City Chic represents something different. They're not perfect, but they're trying to create fashion that's bold, sexy, and designed with actual curves in mind. And in an industry that's historically treated plus-size women as an afterthought, that's worth paying attention to.
