Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Clothes Mentor that kind of makes it brilliant-it's basically the anti-fast-fashion movement wrapped up in a franchise model that actually works. You've got 130+ locations scattered across the United States, each one operating like a treasure hunt where the inventory changes daily because, well, that's how resale works.

The concept is pretty straightforward. You can find like-new designer clothing at up to 70% off mall store prices, with all clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories being gently loved and actually like new. But here's where it gets interesting-they're not just buying whatever shows up. They only buy pieces that are in great shape, on trend, or classic and timeless. That's the filter that keeps it from feeling like you're digging through someone's basement.

And the selling side? Each local team is trained to review your "gently used" items-clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, accessories-right on the spot, and the staff will welcome you, review your items, and pay you then and there for any purchases. No consignment waiting game. Cash. Right now. That's a pretty compelling pitch when you're staring at a closet full of stuff you haven't worn in two years.

The sustainability angle isn't just marketing fluff either. The company generates 65+% gross margins, which is basically double what traditional specialty retailers pull in. Those margins mean the business model actually pencils out, which is why they've grown from basically nothing to 130+ stores in less than two decades.

Notice how they're not trying to be everything to everyone. They accept and sell gently used, clean, and in-style women's clothing ranging from sizes 0 to 26, including plus size, petites, and maternity clothing. Women's fashion. That's it. No kids' stuff (they have a separate franchise for that). No men's clothing. Just women's apparel and accessories, which lets them get really good at one thing instead of being mediocre at five things.

The franchise model itself is kind of fascinating. Ron Olson founded NTY Franchise Company in 2006, and in 2007, his son Chad Olson joined to start franchising Clothes Mentor. These aren't newbies-Ron's the guy who helped build Grow Biz International (now Winmark), which includes Once Upon A Child and Plato's Closet. So they've basically taken the playbook that worked for kids' and teens' resale and applied it to women's fashion.

And it's working. Since early 2007 when they began marketing franchise rights, franchisees have been able to replicate those 65%+ margins, and in just over eleven years, Clothes Mentor became the largest women's upscale resale franchise company in America with 145 stores and plans to reach over 200 within five years.

The timing couldn't have been better either. Clothes Mentor started franchising when the U.S. economy was on the verge of a recession and thrived when other retail stores were struggling. Turns out people still want nice clothes during a downturn-they just want them cheaper. And when the economy recovered? The demand kept growing because the sustainability message started resonating with a whole new generation of shoppers.
