Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Coach-it's basically been having this wild identity journey for the past 80-something years, and honestly? It's kind of fascinating to watch.

Founded back in 1941 in a Manhattan loft, Coach started as six artisans handcrafting leather goods. But what really gets me is how they figured out their signature move: they noticed how baseball glove leather gets softer and more supple with use, and basically said "let's do that with handbags." Genius, right? That attention to craft is still what sets them apart today.

Now, Coach has been through some stuff. There was this whole era where they were everywhere-every mall, every outlet, constant sales. They kind of became the accessible luxury brand, which sounds great until you realize it meant they were stuck in this weird middle ground. Not quite high-end luxury like Chanel or Louis Vuitton, but definitely a step up from your average department store bag. And for a while there in the 2010s, they sort of lost their way.

But here's where it gets interesting. Under creative director Stuart Vevers (who came from Loewe in 2013), Coach has been staging this pretty impressive comeback. They've raised their average handbag prices by 30 percent since 2019, pulled back on the constant discounting, and started courting Gen Z hard. The Tabby bag? It's all over TikTok. They've recruited nearly 8 million new customers in North America in just the last two years.

What I find really compelling is their Coach (Re)Loved program-they're actually taking sustainability seriously, not just as a marketing gimmick. You can trade in your old Coach bags for credit, and they'll refurbish, upcycle, or recycle them. Each piece gets a digital passport so you can track its journey. It's this perfect blend of heritage craftsmanship meeting modern values.

The brand operates over 950 stores across 21 countries now, and they're part of Tapestry, Inc. (which also owns Kate Spade). Their headquarters at 10 Hudson Yards in New York is this gorgeous LEED Gold-certified building with a 15-story atrium-very on-brand for a company that's always been rooted in New York style.

And look, Coach isn't trying to be Hermès. Their bags mostly stay under $1,000, which actually works in their favor right now. With luxury brands like Chanel doubling their prices since 2019, Coach has found this sweet spot for people who want quality leather goods and that luxury feeling without the five-figure price tag. They're calling it "expressive luxury" now instead of "accessible luxury"-basically the same thing but sounds better, you know?

The quality is genuinely there too. Original Glovetanned Leather, buttery-soft suede, that signature craftsmanship. Every bag has a Storypatch inside with a unique registration number proving authenticity. They're not cutting corners; they're just not charging European luxury house prices.

What's cool is how they've embraced their New York roots and this whole "courage to be real" messaging. It feels authentic in a way that a lot of fashion marketing doesn't. They're not pretending to be something they're not anymore-they're Coach, they make really good leather bags, and they're proud of it.
