Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Creativebug-it's basically what happens when someone takes the entire craft store experience and stuffs it into your laptop. And honestly? It kind of works.
Creativebug offers online video arts and crafts workshops and techniques. Learn how to paint, knit, crochet, sew, screen print, and more. But that's just the surface level stuff. What makes this platform interesting is how it sits right at that sweet spot between "I want to learn something new" and "I don't want to leave my house to do it."
The company's been around since 2012, which in internet years makes it practically ancient. Creativebug was purchased by JOANN Fabric and Craft Stores in April 2017. Not much changed with the acquisition, and Creativebug retains a distinct business unit within the company. That JOANN connection actually makes sense when you think about it-they've got the craft supply side locked down, so why not tackle the education piece too?
Here's what's genuinely cool: Enjoy unlimited access to over 1000 online art and craft classes. New classes added every week! That's not just marketing speak either. They're constantly adding content, which keeps things fresh if you're the type who gets bored easily.
The platform works pretty much like you'd expect-pick a class, watch videos, follow along. Each class is divided into different lessons, each covering specific sub-topics and tasks. There's also a handy list of materials, watchlists, and the ability to add notes to courses. Nothing revolutionary, but it gets the job done.
What's interesting is how they've positioned themselves in the market. While everyone else is chasing the latest tech trends, Creativebug doubled down on something decidedly analog-making stuff with your hands. Unlike most online learning platforms, Creativebug is dedicated entirely to crafts, art, printmaking, sewing, knitting, crochet, and other creative endeavors.
The pricing model is subscription-based, which means you're looking at monthly or yearly commitments rather than buying individual classes. Some people love this approach because it encourages exploration. Others find it annoying if they just want to learn one specific thing.
One thing worth noting-they've got partnerships with libraries across the country, so you might already have access through your local library system without even knowing it. Ledding Library patrons now have free access to Creativebug, the inspirational online resource for DIY, crafters and makers. By logging in and setting up an account with a LINCC Library Card, patrons whose home library is Ledding Library (Milwaukie) have access to thousands of award-winning art & craft video classes taught by recognized design experts and artists.
The instructors are where things get legitimately impressive. They've managed to snag some pretty well-known names in the craft world, which elevates the content beyond your typical YouTube tutorial. These aren't just random people with cameras-they're actual experts who know their stuff.
