I am honored to be organizing Knit the Rainbow's first ever community project.
At least 40% of the homeless youth in New York City identify as LGBTQ+. Knit the Rainbow works to empower and protect these youth by providing them with handmade knit & crochet winter clothing accessories.
Knit the Rainbow currently aids LGBTQ+ youth in 4 states and is continually expanding. While you can always help by stitching up winter accessories to donate, we have a community project running over the summer to get us to the next donation season.
We are asking you to knit or crochet (or weave, nalbind, or create with yarn in some other way) 12" x 8" pride flags that will be joined together to make several strands of bunting. Knit the Rainbow goes to several pride fests, conferences, and trade shows over the year to show support and find more volunteers and centers to work with. It's nice to be able to decorate those booths with something yarnie made by all of you. Bunting is perfect because the size and weight of items that can be taken on various trips changes depending on how Knit the Rainbow is getting to the event. If driving, all the strands of bunting can be taken, if flying without much luggage space, just one or two strands can be taken.
With a generous donation of yarn from Cascade Yarns, we have put together kits to make at least 4 each of 12 different pride flags, plus I will be making several progress pride flags. Use the sign up form linked below to get more details and to sign up to make a flag. We are starting with just one flag per volunteer, so if multiple people at your shipping address want to make a flag, please have each fill in the form and let us know who the others at your shipping address are in the notes section. We appreciate people sharing a shipping address to cut down on our shipping costs when we send out the kits.
I'm hoping to be able to send out kits on Mondays, so be sure to get your form in by the end of the week in order to be included in the Monday shipment. I don't know how many weeks it will take to get all the volunteers we need. Our due date to get the flags mailed back to me in New Jersey is July 31st, as that gives me time to get the bunting put together before the winter 26/27 donations start coming in this September.
