Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Crowd Cow-it's basically what happens when someone asks "where does my meat actually come from?" and refuses to accept a vague answer. Founded in 2015 by Joe Heitzeberg and Ethan Lowry in Seattle, the company started with a pretty simple premise that turned into something way bigger than anyone expected.
The origin story is kind of perfect. Two guys wanted to buy beef directly from a farm but realized they'd need a freezer, a pickup truck, and a few thousand dollars. Instead of giving up, they crowdfunded a cow with friends. They emailed 100 friends, and the first cow sold in 24 hours, just in time for July 4th BBQs. That's the kind of accidental genius that makes you think, "why didn't I think of that?"
What makes Crowd Cow different isn't just the direct-from-farm model-plenty of companies claim that now. It's the obsessive transparency. They exclusively offer beef, pork, chicken, seafood and wagyu from sources they know personally with the highest regenerative and ethical standards. Every product on Crowd Cow is raised without unnecessary antibiotics or any added hormones and is taste-tested by experts. You're not just buying meat; you're getting the farmer's name, the farm's location, and how the animals were raised. It's like farm-to-table, but for your home freezer.
And then there's the Japanese A5 Wagyu situation. Crowd Cow began importing Japanese A5 Wagyu beef in 2017, which was bold considering most Americans had never even heard of it. They made premium, restaurant-quality cuts accessible to regular people who just wanted to cook something incredible at home. Sure, it's expensive, but you're getting the same stuff that costs $200 per ounce at fancy steakhouses.
The business model is flexible in a way that actually makes sense. You can do one-time orders or set up a subscription box that you fully customize. To receive free standard shipping, your order subtotal must exceed $199. For free expedited shipping, the subtotal must exceed $399. Everything ships frozen with dry ice, vacuum-sealed to lock in freshness. No signature required for delivery, which is clutch when you're not home.
But let's talk about the sustainability angle, because it's not just marketing fluff. From product to packaging, they're committed to sustainability. They use recyclable and compostable packaging, offset the carbon emissions of every order, and work with producers who care about the environment just as much as they do. The insulation foam literally dissolves in water or can be used as a fire starter. That's the kind of detail that shows someone actually thought this through.
The company's grown significantly since that first crowdfunded cow. As of August 2025, Crowd Cow has raised $25M in funding. The last funding round occurred on May 01, 2018 for $8M. They've got backing from some serious names too-Ashton Kutcher's Sound Ventures, Joe Montana's Liquid 2 Ventures, and Madrona Venture Group. Crowd Cow has been ranked #5 on USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards Best Meat Delivery Service 2024.
Customer service is available 24/7, which is pretty rare for a food delivery company. Their friendly Care Team is available to assist 24/7, 365 days a year. They don't currently have an inbound contact number, but you can connect via e-mail at [email protected], text at 206.539.0639, or submit a request. They also have a rewards program called "Moolah!" (yes, really) where you earn points on purchases.
The selection goes way beyond basic grocery store cuts. You'll find heritage breed pork, pasture-raised chicken, wild-caught Alaskan salmon, and even specialty items like King Kampachi and Mexican blue shrimp. Each product page tells you exactly which farm it came from and how it was raised. It's the kind of transparency that makes you realize how little you actually knew about where your food came from before.
Is it more expensive than the grocery store? Yeah, usually. But you're paying for quality, traceability, and supporting independent farms that prioritize animal welfare and environmental sustainability. Plus, when you factor in the convenience of delivery and the fact that you're getting restaurant-quality meat, the price starts making more sense. Think of it less like grocery shopping and more like having a really good butcher who delivers.
