Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Cuyana-it's basically the anti-fast-fashion brand you didn't know you needed. Founded back in 2011 by two women, Karla Gallardo and Shilpa Shah, the whole concept revolves around this "fewer, better" philosophy. And yeah, I know that sounds like every minimalist brand's tagline these days, but Cuyana actually walks the walk.
The name itself means "to love" in Quechua, which kind of sets the tone for everything they do. They want you to genuinely love what's in your closet instead of having 47 things you wear once. Their approach is pretty straightforward: make timeless pieces from premium materials-think Italian leather, organic Peruvian Pima cotton, Italian cashmere-and craft them so well that they'll outlast whatever trend cycle TikTok is pushing this week.
What's interesting is how they've built this whole ecosystem around sustainability without being preachy about it. 100% of their collection is crafted from sustainable materials, which is actually impressive when you consider most brands are still trying to hit 50%. They've got programs like Cuyana Revive (their resale service) and H.E.A.R.T. to keep products out of landfills. It's that circular fashion thing everyone talks about, but they're actually doing it.
The product lineup is what you'd expect from a brand targeting the "modern woman" demographic-leather bags (their System Tote is apparently iconic), small leather goods, clothing basics, outerwear. Nothing groundbreaking, but that's kind of the point. These are the pieces you reach for when you're running late and need to look put-together without thinking about it. Their Classic Easy Tote has become one of those quiet status symbols-you know, the kind that people who know, know.
Price-wise, they're definitely in the investment piece category. Bags range from around $200 to $500+, which isn't cheap but also isn't Hermès territory. The pitch is that you're paying for quality and longevity rather than a logo. And apparently celebrities are buying it-literally. Angelina Jolie, Meghan Markle and Emily Blunt are just a handful of stars who have worn Cuyana's minimalist wardrobe essentials.
They started as a direct-to-consumer online brand (classic 2011 startup move) but have since expanded to physical retail locations in places like New York's Nolita, Venice's Abbot Kinney, and Stanford Shopping Center. The stores offer personal styling appointments and on-site monogramming, which is a nice touch if you're dropping several hundred dollars on a bag.
One thing that stands out is their marketing approach. They did this April Fool's campaign in 2023 called "Made With Air" that poked fun at greenwashing in fashion, and it actually worked-the brand's social accounts saw a 130% increase in content interaction. It's rare to see sustainability messaging with actual humor.
The company's grown to around 160 employees and reportedly hit $35 million in annual revenue as of 2025. Not unicorn territory, but solid for a brand that's essentially telling people to buy less stuff. They've raised funding from investors like H.I.G. Capital and Greycroft, which suggests someone thinks this whole "quality over quantity" thing has legs.
Look, Cuyana isn't reinventing fashion. But in an industry built on planned obsolescence and trend chasing, maybe that's exactly the point. They're selling the idea that you can build a wardrobe you actually like instead of constantly chasing whatever's new. Whether that's worth the premium is up to you, but at least they're consistent about it.
